    Wiring a Embraco Compressor

    hi

I recently salvage the compressor from my old F&P ref and the model is Embraco FGS 70HAW, its a 220v unit
I want to turn it into a mini air compressor to pump bike tires.

I tried the compressor with the attached circuit and it works. Is there a way to wire the compressor directly without using the circuits ?

The compressor has 3 wires leading to the circuit board
    The mains, well has 2.

    ref wiring.jpg

correction there green wire is actually green and yellow = ground wire
Compressor : Orange, Blue and Brown (Green and yellow stripe= ground)
    Mains : Black and White

    ref circuit.jpg

    Thanks !!!

    Hi,

Surely with lack of suction cooling the compressor will overheat and cook the windings??

I cant see this working mate, the motor has NO cooling.

i need to run it about 2 minutes per application, maybe less would over heating the windings still be an issue ?

    .

    See

    http://www.embraco.com/desktopmodule...ivos/02003.pdf

Your model is in there and there is a wiring diagram.

You need a small air filter on the suction, anything will do
but just stop solids like dust a grit getting in also if you
can drill a hole at the bottom and solder a plug in so you
    can change the oil regularly.

I have seen refrigeration comps used as air compressor
and I have seen them run for years with those modifications.

    Regards

    Rob

I have already installed a scooter air filter at the intake.

    Thanks for the link

    Re: Wiring a Embraco Compressor

Okay I read the manual, understanding it is a different matter. I was wondering if anyone can provide instructions that a 6 year old can follow... like

The unit is a 220volts unit

    1. Connect compressor blue wire to capacitor blue wire
    2. Connect capacitor Brown wire to mains
    3. Connect Compressor orange wire to mains
    4. Disregard compressor orange wire.
    .....

Something like this would be appreciated.... thanks

    Re: Wiring a Embraco Compressor

The compressor has 4 tubes that is cut and 1 is sealed. 1 is input and another is output, those 2 are working, but the other 2 does nothing. Is that cooling suction ? Do i just seal them shut ?

    .

Right the 2 lines at the bottom are oil coolers.

Isolate and make safe, they won't be needed.
The comp body has 3 pipes 2 largish and at the same height.
These are the suction, use one with the filter and either plug
the other or use as an oil filler?

The third (smaller pipe on the body of the comp, it will be at
a different height, is the discharge. connect this to your tyre
    inflator.

The electrics. The white electrical box is the stat and other control
equipment. You need the white flex to the comp body.

Disconnect the white flex from the white box and wire it into an electrical
mains plug (in the UK we call them a three pin plug because it has three pins
but your mains plug will be different).

The electrics. have 4 cables in the white flex, you need three. At the comp
end one cable is sticking out? This is potentially unsafe.

Remove the black plastic lid off the comp terminal box and photo the
connections. We will then be able to look at the compressor connections.

Just be careful with it when you are using it to fill tyres, the compressor will easily pump up to 350psi, enough to burst tyres etc.
Mostly found in Oxfordshire, UK :)

Correction, green wire from compressor is actually green and yellow = ground wire
    So we have
    Brown, Orange and blue

    Re: Wiring a Embraco Compressor

Brown wire is attached to terminal labeled 2 at compressor
Orange Wire is attached to terminal labeled 3 at compressor
Blue wire is at the bottom and could not find any label on it

    Re: Wiring a Embraco Compressor

or is it how to wire a single phase compressor?

Brown compressor connect to your mains live (Brown or red usually) and neutral blue compressor connects to mains neutral (Blue, black)
Capacitor blue to orange, brown joins your brown, live in a three point junction. (check capacitor polarity yourself)

Don't touch any live wires electricity BITES!

    Recycling

Rather than throw away the comp he is taking the initiative to reuse old components
and get the maximum potential. Either way the compressor is a gonner, but at least
this way he may get a few months or even a few years out of it.

Safety is first and foremost, the electrics need doing properly and safely,
but with a little encouragement, why not reuse it.

I have seen this done many times and have done it myself. there was even
a company in the UK that put fridge comps on a small receiver and sold
it as a commercial tyre inflator.

As long as he does it safely I can't see the issue.

    Re: Wiring a Embraco Compressor

Tip the oil out of it and replace it with mineral oil. POE oil (which it is likely to have) is horrifically hygroscopic and can break down into acids. Also, be aware that the air you push into your tyres will have a fine oil mist in it. Not a terrible issue as even normal piston compressors discharge oily air, but the air from a fridge compressor is *considerably* more oily.

People have already mentioned the potential pressure issue. If you were really keen you could get a 120psi pop off valve for a couple of bucks from E-bay and plumb in a brass tee into the discharge with the valve in it *just in case*. 350psi into a bicycle tyre will make a frighteningly big bang when it goes off. On the other hand, grenading a 2L coke bottle brings the neighbours running from 4 houses away and makes a fun party trick.

But seriously, replace the oil. If you can't get your hands on some 4GS mineral oil, ISO68 compressor oil from any auto parts or hardware store will do a sterling job.

Thanks for all the advice on the oil. Will do that tomorrow. I have rewired the it and it works like a charm !!!

Here are some photos of the end product

nice work, like the little air filter in discharge line good touch!

I hate the throw away society these days, everyone just wants to bin it rather than fix it!
