    Very Noisy Mycom screw compressor

Client request a visit to site to check out a noise never heard before on plant over 30 years old.
Asked them to check a few things like coupling, load, unload machine to see if noise changes, check motor bearings, grease etc.
Recently before this we carried out at clients request basic drive rotor end play check (never been asked this before, opposition do it apparently).
The guy who did it claims to get end play movement of 0.05mm or 0.002" each way.
So this sounds suspect of course & is in the back of my mind.
Site 3-4 hours away, so checked out taking laser alignment gear.
This machine is a booster & normally very quite.
Arrive at front gate & can hear it, like a high velocity or high resonance sound.

Check coupling, found compressor hub a bit loose, tighten, check alignment all resonable, motor bearings noisy & need attention.
Noise when running was most prominent in oil separator.
Isolate, check out oil sep, remove inspection cover, all looks good.
Client advised no more than usual oil consumption or carry over into system.
Client had new coalesces sitting on floor next to it, so suggest we change them as we haven't
    really found anything.
    Change & apparently problem solved.

I have never heard of this one before, never really looked at old filters as it's all history now.

As far as end play after tightening coupling hub, problem possibly gone.

    An Interesting scenario Ranger.
Given that a coalesces are nothing more than a series of apertures (read Mesh)
Which as the discharge gases pass through these varied size holes, the denser oil particles are trapped and this denser fluid drops to the bottom of the filter.
If the Mesh was to deform or clog which over time is highly likely, then could the plant discharge gasses "scream" as they are forced through the smaller spaces.
As you say not normally a scenario experienced, but still could be relevant all the same?

    Thanks Grizzly

Thanks Grizzly, most filters just blow out then use more oil than usual.
Time will tell on this one, but it 's been over a week so far so good.

    Hi Ranger
had a similar situation with a vertical separator we both work with . Noisy to point of being a pain, with some extra oil loss though. One coalesor top plate cover gasket had blown out had to be right next to exit point of separator. Fitted new elements and problem noise stopped and no more carry over.

    Magoo,
This also was a vertical oil separator, 35 years old or more which would to today's standards small. 250L with 2 small coalesces 20x9".
It was a new one with me & about all I could do was change them to see if any change.

    Ranger.
sounds like a similar compressor set, mine had a 250M fitted, and two elements in separator.
