    Spiral chiller



    Hello,
    I need your advice..
    What to choose as a refrigerant for spiral chiller? Ammonia or *****? If ammonia, flooded or overflowed?
    Capacity 700 kg/hr for cooling packaged goods from +75°C to +4°C.
    Main concern for customer is reliability and low maintenance cost.

    Please advice.

    What material is the piping or evaporator in the machine? Copper? Steel?

    Well, it is new plant. So, if we choose ammonia the tubes will be from steel, for sure.

    At 700 Kg/Hr and saturated suction temperatures around Minus 5 C: the advantages of high heat transfer and higher suction pressures via flooding or recircing and similar get a little dilute compared to the premium for heavy duty equipment, vessels and the like....And if you build an industrial style circuit to utilize an "ordinary" halocarbon it will be more expensive than an ammonia circuit and more involved from the standpoint of oil management, etc. If this is a free standing circuit at that scale and temperature condition, and nobody at the plant level is going to be directly involved with maintenance of the circuit itself: Go halocarbon and simple. The one area where even then complexity might be a good thing is evap condenser as opposed to air cooled: Depending on local climate, duty cycle and continuity and similar. Note that in either condenser: More is good, this a drag down, process cycle operation and no one will want to wait for the spiral to pull down so outsized motors and lots of condenser usually a good thing....
