Compressor Assistance

I have a Hoover HF39 C 001 which seems to be working fine however the compressor runs very hot (to the point that I cannot touch it for more than about 3 seconds).

I was looking into adding a small 230V electric fan pointing at the compressor to help things out and wanted to connect it so that it would only switch on with the compressor.

Can I just tap into the thermostatically switched line or should I connect it to the compressor pins?

There is no fan at the moment as it has externally mounted coils and the compressor is an Electrolux GL99AH.

I'm not that sure what the actual running
temperature is on those compressors but
they do run hot and it is normal if you can't
bare to touch it for too long.

That said if it is hotter now than it was before
then something is wrong. Compressors heat up
due to a multitude of reasons and most are bad.

Cooling the surface of that comp will have no to
little effect but check the condenser is clean.

The condenser is the black thing that looks like a radiator
on the outside of the fridge and it will also be warm
to touch. Make sure there is no dust or anything
that could prevent it from cooling down.

The condenser is clean, I went over it with the vacuum cleaner and then some all purpose cleaner on a damp cloth. One pipe is very hot and then it cools as it moves through the condenser which makes sense. It also seems to have two loops, one has about 12 lines and one has about 4.

Would it be more beneficial putting a fan facing towards the condenser?

The fan inside is working very well and it gets nice and cold.

Why do you think you need a fan?
Do you suspect the thing is faulty?

If it is working you can leave it alone,
it does not need a fan to make it work.

If it is getting too hot because there is a fault, cooling the condenser will
have little effect because you say that the refrigerant is cool as it leaves the
condenser, so it is working.

Unless you think there is a specific fault there is no need to add the fan.
If there is a fault adding the fan will only mask that fault and not repair it.

I only wanted to add the fan because the compressor is quite loud and I thought that adding the fan would improve the overall efficiency and require the compressor to work less therefore producing less noise.

The unit is old but looks in good condition, I think the compressor could do with replacing but the cost is very high for what is an old fridge/freezer therefore rather than replacing it I was hoping to assist it.

Right!

Compressors get tired with age (don't we all) and like you said, in
the long run, replacement would be the only option. Because of it's
age that is not a real option, so we make the best of what we have.

If the comp is noisy check the rubber mounts it sits on but apart from
that there is nothing you can do. You seem to have done all you can
so as long as the comp noise is not driving you mad, let it just run until
it either drives you mad or it gives up.
