    Ammonia pump down procedures

    Hey,
Wanted to start a thread about getting ammonia out of a piece of equipment for service. Most guys I talk to talk about "pump down" meaning connecting the section to be serviced to the low side and have other compressors pull the NH3 out. But what if it is a single compressor system and it can't be pumped down?

Purge it to a water vessel.

just curious ... a piece of equipment for service is ....

    A compressor package
    Ammonia chiller skid
And aren't there limitations on how much you dissolve in water?
What do you do with the water?

Do you have any restrictions on ammonia, water solutions on this site?
The more water you use the likelyhood of smell is reduced.

If you used an old 44gallon drum or similar,it could be moved to somewhere suitable on site & discarded.

We use a small transfer compressor, so don't have to worry.

If you have another NH3 system close you could connect a hose to it to empty package.

More or less 50% - 50% in volume with the NH3 in liquid state
You shall neutralize the hydroxid of ammonia since is alcalline solution with an acid solution to get PH=7.

Tell me more about this transfer compressor. You mean to pump to another vessel like a recovery machine?

Yes we ave made our own.
One is a large car or truck air con compressor belt driven.
The other a larger unit with suction trap. Both single phase motors.
Yes both used for ammonia, regular oil changes. Larger unit o rings changed to neoprene.
Just use ammonia hoses to transfer to other part of system like liquid receiver.
