    Re: The separator oil

as far as i know, the purpose of the oil separator is to separate the ammonioa from the return oil, so that what returns or circulates to your compressor is oil, and the separated ammonia returns to the receiver or refrigerant line.

    Re: The separator oil

The prime function of an oil separator is to separate the oil from the refrigerant and return it to the compressor crankcase before it can enter other components of the system. Remember, oil is not a refrigerant, it belongs in the crankcase to lubricate.

Oil separator has dual function. One is separate the oil from refrigerant as passandscore said and it is a silencer considerably reduces the discharge gas pulsations for quiet operation.

    Hi Mfm Sheri.
You do not mention what Sabroe Oil recovery System you need explaining.
Generally Recip compressors have standard "Drum type" oil recovery systems.
Which force the hot discharge gasses over a helix vane system or similar.
So as the hot gas that enters said drum at the bottom it flows upward in a spiral motion. Where as the oil laden gas passes over internal restrictions.
Oil droplets form and as they grow in size they succumb to gravity and drop out of the gas flow, coming to rest within the bottom of the oil separator.
Many of these type have a float arrangement that opens to the oil return line once a minimum oil level within the vessel is achieved.
This then ensures that oil is returned to the compressor rather than cooled discharge gases.
Some even have a time delay solenoid valve to ensure that any condensed gases are dissipated on start up and prior to the oil return line becoming active.
A similar system can be found on BPHE systems.

However on many Screw systems a coelessor strainer / filter is used.
Where the oil saturated discharge gas enters the oil reservoir through a central filter (Micro mesh) and as the gases pass through.
The oil droplets grow and fall into the oil below.
These are extremely efficient provided the load is stable, but after an unscheduled shut down.
Where the plant could be restarted with elevated operating temperatures and loads. It is possible to blow the gases through the filter with such force that large amounts of oil are not recovered but blasted through into the system!
So on a restart slow is good fast is not!
Nor is high discharge pressure temperatures.

    Re: The separator oil

Oil separator is generally used on systems in the following conditions :

    1) when oil is non-miscible with refrigerant ; example / ammonia
    2) used on all the flooded evaporator systems
    3) used on systems where evaporating temp below -20 deg c
