    Favorite Megger?

Hi. Does anyone have a favorite megaohm meter? I just spent far too long chasing a problem and I think it's going to end up being an intermittent compressor problem. Having a megger probably would have saved me a lot of time on this one.

So, do you like the old-school kind with a crank? Are the new-fangled digital ones what you crave? Any brands to avoid?

    Thanks!

I got a digital one made by Megger. Nothing posh, reads with a bar graph and also numbers. From Ebay £30. Does me.
Others swear by the moving needle type as some say you can catch a intermittant short as you will see the needle flick whereas a digital one might not refresh quick enough to show.
    Cheers,
    Andy.

Avo Megger BM104 iirc. Fixed 500V, because some manufacturers have told me that 1000V sometimes fries the internal motor klixons & not to use more than 500V.

Have been issued & used an Aussie brand (forget the name right now, most of the others would know it) that has the advantage of a locking test button. But it's a bulkier package & too big to be in the tool box 'in case'.

    Re: Favorite Megger?

I got an old extech digital one off ebay. Works as advertised. Showed me the compressor was toast instantly. Takes 6 AA batteries though and I got to clean out the old leaky ones from the unit. Makes me respect the hand crank ones. Never out of juice and no batteries to leak.
