    r22r/r12

the answer to this may be simple and my brain is worn out, when r12/r502 was being phased out i cannot remember it being offered in reclaim form as r22r is,is it because times/laws have changed or that its all about the money!!

It was simpler than that Cad!
The production of the refrigerant was stopped. But many stockpiled "Virgin" refrigerant to be used as and when.
    Until the Stockpiles ran out!
It is said that at one point the smuggling of R12 was more profitable than Gold.
With certain countries including USof A. still manufacturing I believe?

With R22 .. No stockpiling allowed well as Virgin refrigerant anyways!

    .

What Griz says and I'll add that because the phase out dates were so short
the reuse of reclaimed R12 & R502 was not a consideration because the gasses
were banned within about 5 years whereas R22 was given about 25 years.

I know a few who bought pallets of R12 thinking they'd make a fortune. However everybody went straight over to R49 and R69 and never really missed either

R22 (Ozone depletion potential) ODP is 0.05 and R12 was 1 ODP.

Every gas was compared to R12 and it was all to do with the
amount of Chlorine in the refrigerant.

R22 has such a small amount that some Countries don't even think
    it is a problem.

The US are not banning it until 2030 I think.

Production and import of virgin R22 is limited to 39 million pounds in the US in 2013. Most everybody is stock piling their reclaimed R22 rather than turn it in.

    Excellent reply Grizzly!
Actually, many made a fortune by stockpiling R12. Good business, buy at 1, sell at 20!
With the case of R22, the Authorities wanted to avoid all the black market created when phasing out R12... Well, more or less they managed XD Anyway, it's funny to see same actors who "won" a lot of money with R12, trying to do the same with R22...

    Regards,

    Nando.
