    Freezer Door Glass Cracked

I have a tripple glassed (freezer door) that I brought to put in as a glazed house window, hoping to combat loosing heat in winter. It measures 1500 high X 485 wide. It has 240V wiring hooked up on the long side.

I placed the door in the sun for a month to see how it would stand up to the elements of direct sunshine. The centre plane of glass has cracked, but not the outside glass pieces. This is strange.

Can anyone who is in the know suggest why the centre pane of glass has cracked and not the outsides panes? I believe the door maybe vacumn sealed.

    Thanks

Did it have inert gas between the glass sheets?

    Thanks for the reply.

I am not certain if there is inert gas or vacummn between the 3 panes of glass.

Is there a way of determining such?

There is a sticker on the edge of the glass with numbers and measurements in inches. I could photo such if you like. There is rubber that seems to be very well stuck/welded on the edges all of the way around the perimeter of the door.

    .

These doors are mass produced and not built to
tight tolerances and I think that the problem you
experienced is to do with the way the glass is put
    into the frame.

In my opinion what I think has happened is the frame
and the glass have expanded and contracted in the heat
of the day and the cool of the night.

Because the door is not designed for this I think it has stressed
the internal pane a little too much and it had nowhere to go so
    cracked.

It might have been a design issue but I think if you had 10 stood
side by side some might fail and some might not. I don't think it
would improve with inert gasses between the panes because I think
it is the metal frame that is the problem.

If you could embed the frame into the property then it might reduce
    the expansion of the frame.

    Regards

    Rob

The glass will expand as it gets hot, your test was probably outside the normal. I had a high rise building that had reflective stuff added to glass exterior to slow down solar gain, problem was glass got hotter and could not expand within framing and started to crack, not a good thing to happen in a 22 level building. Panic stations to get the reflective reflective stuff removed, streets closed the whole nine yards.
