    Angry Luton Airport Security

I really like security guy's at airports and think they do a great job! I have no problem stripping to the waist and emptying my wordly goods in the plastic trays, its just like wearling a seat belt...self preservation!

BUT they just lifted the only tool I every carry this trip to Edinburgh, a ratchet compressor valve key. Its only 5 inches long and has no sharp edges. I carried it back to the UK on Sep 14 after you know what, twice around the states, back and forward across europe for 5 years and no one ever claimed it was a lethal or even a slightly threatening item.

Most trips I carry a very heavy lop top, dozens of cables (garots?) and at least one heavy glass bottle of gin for the GF's cornflakes. Far more lethal (the glass not her).

    Jobs worth or what!

Whats the most daft item security have lifted from you?

The small collapsible pair of scissors that I used to have on my keyring (1.5" long) ideal for clipping that broken nail. It was only on a domestic flight - East Mids to Glasgow

I have to chuckle at the ferry terminal when going out to Jersey from Weymouth.

Now I understand and appreciate the need for security in the right place but honestly have you ever known of a fastcat ferry being hijacked ??

It hasn't got enough fuel to go any further than France so I don't think I'll ever hear the "Take me to Cuba" cry on board.

I do a fair bit of work air-side at Gatwick. They do a token rummage through my kit but I've never been asked what's this or that. Bit of a joke really.

Probably coffee flu quite close to bird flu, maybe some flea **** drops into the coffee. Could be disastrous and chaotic. Epidemic, FLEA FLU.

The funny thing is that anything sharp is taken away before entering the departure lounge. In the departure lounge, one can buy a bottle of whisky at leisure; take it on the plane; break the bottle and use it as a knife!

    Re: Luton Airport Security

We went to New York a few months after 9/11 and at the airport on the way back to the UK, got one of our carry on bags searched. The security was tight, about 6 soldiers dressed in combat gear with automatic rifles watched over the search area. The x ray team thought they had seen a prohibited object in the bag and after about 10 minutes searching gave up. I dont know why they bothered because when we were served food on the flight they gave us a metal knife and fork (I have never seen this before) Now the whole flight is armed!

We found the offending item when we pulled one of the crackers that were in that bag on christmas day, A pair of siccors!

I have been taken away only things like shampo, deodorant, and such things. Pretty idiotic i think.

But if you really want to get away with everything in the security, at least here in Norway, you need a security card with a symbol of a hammer on it.

I have a nephew working as a mecanic for a small airliner here in northern Norway. They regularly supply equipment for special flights, among other places, to Svalbard. There everyone is required to carry rifles due to the threat from polar bears. They also supply equipment for special flights to remote areas where the task can be to blast somthing avay. All this equipment is to be taken through the security check. They once was to equip a flight to Svalbard for someone that amongst other things should do some blasting. My nephew dragged a trolley with several cases of explosives, several rifles and ammo to the security. My nephew showed the security guys his security card with the hammer symbol on which permit him to take everything through the security. But still the staff sent all the explosives, rifles and ammo througt the X-ray machine. Everything was thoroughly opened and checked. And then given back to my nephew. He wondered what they where looking for, mayby a small knife hidden in the explosives.

    Re: Luton Airport Security

Working at airports airside has always been a nightmare.

Some are better than others. Newcastle and Stansted are OK, Security is tight but they live in the real world.
LUTON now thats a different story.
They have a lot of equipment under the terminal within eyeshot of the security checkpoint but still its the full works each time you go in. Boots off, Seach, Though scanner, toolbox through scanner, No Phones, No PDA's and dont even try and take some RTU through unless you are going to drink some to prove its nothing explosive. I think with airports you need to have someone in there permentantly, someone who security are used to seeing every day.

    Regards

    Fatboy

Are you mad????... Smash a perfectly good bottle of Scotch just to hijack a poxy air liner???

If you drunk it first, then you would have a far happier outlook on life and not want to cause all that trouble .. And the added bonus is that even that ugly stewardess would look good.

Thumbs down Re: Luton Airport Security

I had a call to luton airport over a year ago, upon checking in with security i filled in the form's and was refused for having a criminal record from years ago. (schoolboy fight 14 yr's ago) so "fair enough" i said, left site and rang my manager to tell him, he got on his high horse and said there unable to do that under the offender rehabilitation act (after a period you don't have to reveal it - to anyone).
So he rang the security manager of the airport who apolagised and said i could return, at this point i was 100 odd miles away so i arranged for the following evening out of hours to return.
The next time i arrived it was another guy on the desk, i filled out the form and when i looked at the small print next to the decleration of criminal record, it said 5 yr's and under have to be declared - which they never mentioned the last visit, told me i had to declare everything.

So, i ticked the box for no record, they let me in and i started work with my mate, we had to be escorted by a woman from boot's(where i was working) all the time.

Next thing i knew i had police all over me , the bloke who had refused me the former day had spotted me working and called the police, they had got my form i filled in and ticked the box with no record.
Police where total tosser's, i explained that i had authorisation from the head of security and that if he took the time to read the small print he would see i never had to declare in the first place.
They pinned me up the wall, was swearing at me, searching me and so on, i felt humiliated infront of the public in the passenger terminal, then they spotted my residency visa for australia and quizzed me on my intention to move.
After over 3 hour's they let me return to work, at which point i told the lady from boot's i was not prepared to work under them circumstances and i packed up my tools and left. My office forwarded a letter onto the customer stating they were not reasonable working conditions.

I will never attend that site again, the only site i refuse to go to now.

    Chris

PS I have a new found hatred for the british police now.

    Oh my...
No customer is worth that hassle!

    I've had the opposite happened...

Years ago, during my first six months in this foreign country, I was sent to look at a close control unit....
IN RAFs COMPUTER CENTRE, where they keep all their data of their pilots and planes!!!

I did not even have an UK driving licence back then!

The 20 page questionnaire I had to fill in were a joke when it came to people not born here in UK...
(One question were where my grand parents lived or were buried)
I even honestly answered the questions about military training....

I filled it in and were convinced they would ask me to leave.
    But NO!!!
5 minutes later I got my pass and was told to go ahead in....
