    Insulating hot gas lines

    Hi Everyone,

I was hoping you guys can help:

Is it common to insulate hot gas lines in industrial NH3 systems? A little bit of back ground, +25F/85F
    NH3
    Liquid Recirc

    THANKS!

    Re: Insulating hot gas lines

It depends. Defrost hot gas line should be insulated. Hot gas line between compressors and condensers shouldn't.

    .

It does depend on what the hot gas line is used for.

Where is the hot gas going and will you still need it to be
    hot when it gets there?

If you are using the hot has for defrost purposses or for
heat recovery then it would be recomended to insulate the
pipe, if the pipe is the discarge from the compressor to the
condenser then usualy no, do not lag the pipes.

    Regards

Insulating the discharge line is sometimes specified where there is a risk of burns.

Thats correct and also if the condensers are remote to the
compressor the discharge is insulated to prevent the
discharge gas de-superheating before it gets to the condenser.

i don't think that desuperheating is bad. Actually, it helps to reduce heat rejection that required by the condenser. However, hot gas condensation in the discharge line is bad and insulation can help.

Defrost lines with the chance of condensing refrigerant should be to prevent Shock when a defrost started.
