Thumbs up R22 refrigerant line sizing

    Dear all,

Can any body help me in refrigerant line sizing?

For an R-22 refrigeration system using copper pipe operates at 41deg F evaporator and 104 deg F condensing.Capacity is 3.984 TR, and the liquid line is 164 ft equ.length with a riser of 6m.

can anybody please tell me liquid line size & how ; according to the link http://www.refrigeration-engineer.co...ing-in-lbs-min file P5 to P7 page 2.5

    Hi there tjk2007

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

3.984 tons is approx 14 kw.
If your capacity is 14 kw @ +5°c suction on R22, and your pipe run is 164 ft, then I think your pipe size should be 1 1/8 suction and 5/8 liquid.

    Hope it helps

164 ft is a fair run- comfirm with manufacturers on whether pipes req upping for the run and if the system is capable of that run

    ASHRAE DETAILS-1.pdfASHRAE DETAILS-2.pdf

    Dear all,

I agree the liquid line size, and suction line size.

In ASHRAE 2010 there is a calculation for line sizing. It is mentioned that the size of liquid line at 1k drop is 15mm OD. I can agree 1k drop is 50m *0.02K/m delta T(from table 3).

How the line size is selected as 15mm OD for 1K drop?

For your reference i attach the details.

Thanks in advance and sorry for IP & SI units.

    Re: R22 refrigerant line sizing

R22 and 5/8" liquid line is good for nominal 60 metre pipe run. the penalty is condensing temp and vertical separation plus length losses, possible flashing off in liquid line pre TXValve with natural sub cooling and pressure drop, Txvalve could be hunting and irratic operation A sight glass at the TXV would confirm or not, sounds stupid but insulate the liquid line to maintain constant liquid feed to TXValve, the flash gas after txv will be high but you will get stable TXV superheat control
