Biggest electric motor on refrigeration compressor/s

Whats the biggest motor you have seen or worked on in refrigeration?

I know there is some big stuff out there, so interested to hear.

Re: Biggest electric motor on refrigeration compressor/s

Biggest for me was a Dunham Bush water chiller. Part wound compressors - don't know what size but most of the 100A fuses were blown because they remaining 2 compressors (out of 4) were down to earth.

Messed about with an old air handler at Centre Parks, Longleat. Looked like it was made about the same time as Noah's Ark. They were star/delta motors. Clamped a cable on startup and it was over the scale of the meter (100A) then settled down to 50. Stood inside the handler when it was running - probably explains why most of my hair is missing.

    Cheers,
    Andy.

425 kw on Howden 255 long rotor, but I'm sure there are plenty bigger.

There is a process ammonia plant I worked on but not this particular unit.

Its a double shaft high voltage motor, on one end is a Mycom 320L & the other end through a reversing gearboxis another Mycom 320L.

    Its motor is about 2800kw

    Hi. all

    ... till now ...

Howden 321 with R1270 (-20*C/+47*C) and Ansaldo motor of 1600 kW at 3570 rpm
... next one is about 2300 kW

    Best regards, Josip

400 kw in ice block machine with 450 rpm 30 years ago I think it was york or ... ,
but biggest machine room I installed has a 750 hp wit 5 compressor on it NH3.
good job I did. 100 ton per day chlorine liquid system last year .

Here's a centrif starting up. These can be run off of 3000V at about 50 to 60 amps.

The chiller can be heard surging soon after the guide vanes open. The tech goes back to lower the limit on the chiller loading to avoid the surge area. Perhaps until the purge unit has cleared air from the system.

    Hi Glenn.
That guy is some kind of idiot!
What would happen if the drive shaft friction welded itself to the fan blades.
His engineering practices are as ancient as the kit he is working on.

    Scary stuff.
But good post all the same.
    Thanks Grizzly

    ..

    Grimsby ice house.

Largest refrigeration plant in its day.

The motors below left are still there in situ. bottom right are similar motors.

More than 1000hp and there were started manualy

Re: Biggest electric motor on refrigeration compressor/s

Work on one plant with a few S75 Stal screws.
    DOL high voltage 800 hp.
The coupling hubs on compressor have no key, so uses a hydraulically driven taperlock to secure on shaft.
The hydraulic pump to drive it on goes up to 30 000psi.
You measure outside of taperlock to a certain growth measurement to determine if taper is driven
    on far enough.
Personnally would use a keyway, but seems to be the trend on European screw compressors Stal, Grasso,Sabroe.
Usually **** myself with worry, as know consequences if you get it wrong, especially after full overhaul.

Re: Biggest electric motor on refrigeration compressor/s

I work in a company that manufactures and sells industrial refrigeration systems, my work was in the Department of assitance machines, I have seen very large machines such as Howden WRV 321, 320 lud Mycom, 32 llnb kobelco etc ... these machines were combined with electric motors abb, leroy somer etc from 415 kW, 500 kW and 750 kW at low voltage (400 volts) mind from 1000 kW 1250 kW Medium voltage normally. In my work I ritch serviced more than 1000 machines all over the world like this. Sorry for my English.

Re: Biggest electric motor on refrigeration compressor/s

    Hi Ranger1.
A mycom 320 booster auto trani starter, never started with the MCC panel open, the fault rating at start up was horrendous, I think is was 385 Kw low voltage. On first start in rush currents took out site transformer and local area supply transformer, we weren't very popular. Way back commissioned a couple of 3.3kv centrifs, what a performance, the first commissioned with live startup took out the site transformer protection despite the electrical engineers assurances that he had set them up correctly. The down side was that the site was a hospital, you would not beleive the greif that created.

Largest were several Carrier 19DR centrifs at gatwick airport as part of an on site maintenance team. Approx 1800TR or 6500kw cooling duty each IIRC

Not for me and I kept away from them as much as possible as I don't like really big stuff..

I`m about to change jobs to a site that has 3x 750kw air compressors, I hope a motor change doesn`t arise as they go 2.5 tons each

In the old terminal plant room they were R11...........In the North terminal (which were going in when I was there) I think they were on 134a but not sure..

Harland Simon 750 horse dc tandem and a 3.3kv 1.8kw ac, that was in a rubber compounders. On refrigeration 80 kw Carlisle central unit (open compressor), it was charged with etha, nobody told us and we found out the hard way!
Training may be finished but experience is never complete.
