is there a better antifreeze than ethylene glycol?
Hello everyone
I'm currently working with a cooling system that operates with a 40% volume aqueous glycol solution, i'm trying to find if theres a similar antifreeze that will provide better heat transfer while maintaining (or idealy improving) other properties (such as viscosity, fouling factor, etc)
thanks!

What temperature are you operating this solution at as the data changes with temperature?

Propilane Glycol is what we use.

Mono-Propylene is the food grade glycol if any possiblity of food contact

Propylene glycol is the best and it can be supplied natural or with different types of inhibitors depending on temp range. Google "Tyfocor glycols" We must have non toxic glycols in our systems.

Hi Mike Holm.
what anti freeze do you use in your vehicles, all eco freindly stuff I hope. Toronto gets nut cracking cold I beleive in winter.

Re: is there a better antifreeze than ethylene glycol?
we still use highly toxic ethylene glycol except me as i buy the proplyene by the IBC (1000L). I think some stores sell non toxic stuff but it is not seen much.
9C here today and yesterday. don't know if it broke a record but it won't be taxing the antifreeze.
What do you use?

Re: is there a better antifreeze than ethylene glycol?
We use both ethylene and propinene.Propylene is more expensive, non-toxic and has WORSE heat transfer. That is Juicetavo asked.
Many years ago we used NaCl and CaCl2.Cheap, non-toxic but aggressive.

Re: is there a better antifreeze than ethylene glycol?
Propylene is not that much less in heat transfer and only a bit more money. The negative points don't outweigh the positive points. Number 1 is that if I was in Austria, I could put it in wine after I used it in the system
