York Open Drive Screw Chiller

Hi,
Anyone ever overhaul a York 250RT screw compressor?
Heard that after the overhaul, it will be difficult to regain back the full capacity due to tolerance out, isn't it true?

While I have not overhauled a York screw compressor I question the statement.

If the compressor (after rebuilding) is out of tolerance, then the rebuild would be in question.

The capacity should not be in question, if the rotor tips and the compressor housing are in good condition. If the compressor was operated with liquid injection oil cooling, the rotor tips may have been worn down. This could result in slightly lower capacity.

Is someone trying to sell you a new compressor instead of a rebuilt one?

I have a 250RT York water cooled open drive screw chiller using R-22. One of the evaporator copper tube is cracked,chilled water finally filled the entire system up with water. Need to plugged the leaky tube, remove all water out from the expansion orifice and recommended to overhaul the compressor.

If a tube has ruptured in the chiller I would recommend you test the remaining tubes for integrity. A pressure test is the most simple method.

However, if the one tube has ruptured it may be possible that more tubes will have the potential to leak also.

An eddy current test will provide a reasonable method of testing the chiller (and condenser) tubes for impending leaks.

Plugging tubes is relatively easy, but rebuilding screw compressors can be expensive. Before re-starting a rebuilt compressor on this system I would suggest the above test so that you are aware of other potential leaks.

Iceman, thank you very much for the advice. We do have an Eddy Current Set and so happened I was looking for the calibration tube this afternoon, but I failed to find it, can anyone here send me a quote for supply a set of York & Trane heat exchanger tubing for 1/2", 5/8", & 3/4" in one foor in length.
