Closed Vs Open Chilled water system
Dear Friends ,
I have a lot of confusion between closed and open chilled water system. So, my questions are :
1. How closed water system differ from open water system.
2. Which one is better for industrial and commercial applications.
Previously I asked the same question, but not get a proper reply.I work in a remote region and nobody can clear my doubt. I hope my seniors here will help me in this. Thanks for your cooperation.
I wish you have a good weekend

Could you clarify what you mean by "closed water system" and "open water system"?
Some examples of one and another?

Re: Closed Vs Open Chilled water system
Hi Nike ,
I hope you are enjoying your weekend.
Few days back , I started a thread related to " Expansion Tank " , you can check it by clicking on the link below.
http://www.refrigeration-engineer.co...Expansion-Tank
In the eight reply , Brian asked me " Is the chilled water system to be an open vented system or is it to be a sealed system?
Different type of expansion system required. " ??
After it , number of members shared their views regarding the same and explained it.But still it is not clear to me. i hope you will help me in this.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Re: Closed Vs Open Chilled water system
Open system is open to atmosphere and expansion of water is done by changing level of water in open expansion vessel, and atmospheric air could enter the system. Therefore, new oxygen is constantly introduced to system and corrosion is severe.
Closed system is closed to atmosphere and expansion of water is happening in membrane vessel where nitrogen gas is changing its volume and pressure according to expansion and contraction of water in system. Since there is no connection to atmosphere, when free oxygen is spent in system, corrosion stops.
2. Which one is better for industrial and commercial applications.
Another vew:

What is mentioned for heating is same as if the cooling of water is in question, water expands and contract with temperature change.Last edited by nike123; 02-10-2011 at 10:44 AM.
