silly question
could anyone tell me if an undersized peice of equipment would cause the lower half of a evaporator to freeze. thanx chaps

is the gas charge right, tev ok? ur a bit vague with ur question.we need model,application,operating parameters superheat/subcooling air on/off coils,sight glass condition,age, setpoints/control strategy,-the more info the better the diagnosis-oh and piccys are useful

Describe the system, temps and pressures etc.
Would think a faulty tev, defrost heater or settings, dirty evaporator, shortage of refrigerant etc would be likely candidates too.

sounds like evap starved of refrigerant.
- gas charge
- expansion valve
- poor air flow
I've seen this bottom half freezing many times. its usually the above. but u need to provide more info.fridge
