What do they mean by an oiless compressor, surely a contradiction in terms,if it has a recip piston it needs lubrication, any one ?

All the small ones are oilless now! thats why they are so noisey,

Like a lot of hobby air compressors now, i think they use teflon or some such in the cylinder to reduce friction.

As simple as it says, no oil.

    Re: recovery machine ?

There was a problem with some models. Apparently, when first used straight out of the box, one has to recover refrigerant from a recently opperating system, rather than something that had been shut down for some time. I was told it had to do with oil with the refrigerant that lubes the machine parts. Yeh, they are noisy.. Mike.

    .

They use carbon fibre pistons, con rods and rings so don't need
oil to run. Oil from the system passes through but they are deemed oil free.

    Cool runnings

Carbon filled ptfe is the material most compressors use.
You only need to spit on carbon to lubricate it

So it's a gimmick then you still need to be carefull with oil cross contamination I thought maybe it had a oil removal system, at the price they want for one I would have thought it was platinum ****** plated

It's no gimmick as long as you use the correct methods there will no cross contamination, I use mine all the time on various gases and not had a problem yet, could be 22 one day or 404 the next

Even big compressors can be oil free, 340hp double acting air compressors use PTFE piston rings and austenetic liners. They cost a fortune to maintane so they`re a disapearing breed now

Gast make oil free vacuum pumps. Lovely units, but expensive! I use a set of old carbon vanes as a cup holder, figured that is about all they are usable for after removal, unless I need a big 4H pencil.
