I suppose there must be a few drums lurking about, but it's totally illegal in Europe.

Hi, I was just on ship that still has York LTD with R11.
They don't have enough to continue to run so they are asking for a retrofit.
The R123 is a possibility but I heard there is another one available now ??? because R 123 is dangerous (gives cancer) , do you know this new one ???

Also you didn't need gauge lines, you could just pour it in Wasn't it one of the first refrigerants to be phased-out in Europe in the early 90's

    Quite probably they do.

This is because India is an 'Article 5' country under the terms of the Montreal Protocol.

This allows certain developing countries a per capita allowance of CFCs.

Hi Greg, The negative pressures are bad if you have a leak they suck in air when they are standing still, believe me ive had my share of problems in that area.

I have seen a toy bird (basically a heat engine decorated to look like a bird) that uses R11 as the working medium.

I can't believe it's still available. If we come across an R11 system that has been leaking we must recover any refrigerant and send for disposal. The system MUST then be scrapped or retrofitted. Thats Australia

    Hi
I recovered some recently. Opened the valve at the bottomof the condenser float chamber and sucked it into some recovery vessels
Easiest refrigerant I have ever worked with

    Kind Regards Andy

    Re: R11

And to purge the air when the chiller was running there was a valve on top of the condesor to let air/R11 escape. Thats why it is panned.

Teach me to search old posts.
R245fa comes from Honeywell (BOC stock) be warned that the current production is foam grade but they will mix up some nice clean stuff if you ask. We have been on R245fa since 2002 and R11 it aint. Honeywell were working with Ecotez on a flushing system that was an IKK this year.

Oh and they also do a flushing grade of R245fa mixed with a stronger solvent.

    Re: R11

Negative pressure R11 chillers were a real pig, I had one leak like a cullinder, loose its vac overnight, held 10psi over a weekend, turned out to be flattend O ring on the oil cooler, made sure I change every O ring I ever disturbed on R11 units after that. Its hard to find leaks that leak inwards!

    Re: R11

Hi.The R11 is still in action.Just been in Singapore for retubing of one chiller .The subcontractors was using it to clean the system.

I do belive they get it from India/China.

I do agree it has been banned in Europe for many years.

Many of the old ships has still the stuff on the plant. The old reefer ships from Russia still have R12 on ther plants.

    Re: R11

Suck in air is true. All R11 and 123 chillers ive seen have had purge units attached, These units have counters so you have a Idea it the leak size. If you develope a moderate leak , you can still save 90% of the charge. Try that with a positive pressure refrigerant. Plus I have chemical Info sheets on R123 that state its not as harmfull as lead to belive. Its the doing of a certain company that produce 123 chillers and there properganda to stop others from using there bad ass gas.

    Re: R11

Some York OT (LTD compressors) are still alive in North of Italy. Some retrofitted with r123, others with original R11 refr. Customers fill the warehouse of R11 drums in order to have refr to spare.
Air Purger is basic to the good chiller run. In the low pressure side it's difficult to trace a leak. I hate it !

    hmmmmmmmmm......
I'd be very quiet about that if I were you !

There's no legal way that you can put CFCs into a system any more. It's just as illegal in Italy as it is in any other EU country.

Just because they get away with it doesn't mean that they won't get caught.

well, we only note that some of this groups are running, but no one of my organisation put hands on it ! Anyway, there's anyone that can charge and service this chillers (and fill refrigerant on it), but they run and run, and run.....

True you do loose gas with a purge unit , but it is still better that loosing a complete charge. yes?

What would you do if you had a stockpile of r11 or r12 , sell it illegaly? Personaly I would return it to the supplier for a cash back per kilo. The Manufactories of these world deadly refrigerants should be held responsible for there product.

At my workplace we changed out our old R11 refrigerant to R134A and just got rid of 60gal of the stuff that had been sitting on our loading dock for 2 years. Being a government department we pawned our barrels off on another department. Strange thing about government, everyone else has to follow the rules but them......

I know alot of R12 chillers have been convertered to R134A but R11 chillers would use R123 , sorry if it was a typo.

no, ours was converted from an R11 to a R134A. I don't know what had to be changed for this to happen as I wasn't involved in the change over. But in the building I am currently in everything gets done because the silver rings say so and no other opinion is taken into account. It's just another reason i'm leaving government.
