The simplest explanation is by telling you how an 'icy ball'works.

An icy ball was two steel balls joined at the top by a steelpipe.

Inside there was a mixture of ammonia(refrigerant) and water(absorber)

You would tip it up so all of the liquid would go into oneball and then heat that ball, placing the second ball in water to cool it

The heat would drive the ammonia out of the ammonia watermixture into the second ball, after a set period of time when all of the ammoniawas in one ball and the water in the other you would place the ammonia filledball in a special 'ice box' and then the ammonia would start to evaporate andget cold and would be absorbed into the water in the second ball outside theice box.

This cooling would last until all the ammonia had evaporated, when you would need to separate the water and ammonia again.

Modern absorption refrigerator use the same principle exceptthat it is a continuous process. They may also have hydrogen in the system toassist it working.

Absorption air conditioning system use water as therefrigerant and lithium bromide as the absorber and work under vacuum.

They are useful if you have a lot of waste heat to operatethem.

The use of ammonia in an air conditioning system would behazardous as it is a poison gas

    Good morning Khongminhhason

Both reply's so far are about aBsorption not aDsorption

Absorption is the process of of two materials bonding absorbing each other. This process is not reversed easily.

Adsorption is the process of attachment. Where one substance attaches itself to the other. This process is easily reversed.

Check out this link a little Campy but a great explanation of the difference of the two without having to listen to a sales pitch from one of the Manufactures

    <----ehem
Refrigeration is not just cool, it is my life.
