Two small or one big screw comprossor should I take for ice making?
Hello
I would like to thank every one here on this forum for the informative threads which helped me to learn a lot while I don't have an idea about the refrigeration.
Actually I am working in an ice factory in KSA .We are going to buy a new block ice .However we have two offers and I don't know which one is better ?:
2X HSK7461-80 Semi-hermetic screw compressor
or
1X HSN8571-125 Semi-hermetic screw compressor
I have a questions ,,please help
How to know how many horse power do they have ?
sorry for my English :\
Best regards
Max Tan

The 2 compressors each have 80hp and the single compressor has 125hp, you be better with 2 compressors because if 1 breaks down you still have the back up

Hello .
I recomanded 2 screw compressors .Like Ghaz ,you will have 1 compressor for back-up and a better capacity control on the system.
I recomanded with 2 refrigerant circuits .
Best regards.

Get an offer for a real plant using ammonia. it's more economical and better for the environment. In 6 years in KSA I installed only ammonia plants and scrapped only ***** plants.

It's impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious...
Don't ever underestimate the power of stupid people when they are in large groups.
Please, don't teach me how to be stupid....
No job is as important as to jeopardize the safety of you or those that you work with.

Re: Two small or one big screw comprossor should I take for ice making?
Hi maxtan
I would agree with charlie n, ammonia would be better one of the most efficient refrigerants around.
Two comps are the best option for the reasons given by GHAZ and bayculaudyu but this option would cost more because you will have to double up on controls, more pipe work, etc.
If there are no finincial constraints I would go for ammonia with two comps as it is always good to have a back up compressor.

Paul

Re: Two small or one big screw comprossor should I take for ice making?
Thank you everybody for the suggestion
I know that the amonnia is the most efficient option. However, we didn't choose it because of safety purpose. It's quite dangerous and we don't want to sacrifice our workers .
I have heard about some cases of ammonia infiltrations it's deadly :S
Thanks again
Max

ammonia is dangrous , yet it is the most efficient gas, compare being hit by a bullet in the leg or be exposed to nukes !
I definetly agree with the gentlemen on 2 circuits and two compressors in HVACR two separate circuits are safe !

Ammonia is only dangerous if not handled properly. compared to putting money in the bank or burning it in a wasteful design I always choose ammonia. Any professional will do the same.

Re: Two small or one big screw comprossor should I take for ice making?
Go for 3 screws with 50 % redundancy, which means you can have one screw off line for maintenance, plus extends the life of each machine as lead lag is rotated. Ammonia is the best, and should not be a problem if designed and installed and commissioned correctly, add maintenance as well

Re: Two small or one big screw comprossor should I take for ice making?
I would go for two screws each being 125 hp so that i have a 100% back up and time for maintenance on each comp. I would also go for ammonia as it is much cheaper in the long run.
We have massive ice plants producing +- 200 tons of ice in 24 hrs and its all ammonia.THE BEST WAY OF LEARNING IS TO DO IT YOURSELF!!!
