    Banana Ripening

dear RE friends, i found this very useful forum while i was searching in google, we are interesting to build 4 ripening rooms for bananas, i would like your help from your experience about :
    1) Evaporators
    2) controllers
    3) Cpu system to make all the rippering process automatically

I am thinking to for Alfa Laval HRC-D

and for ethylene the Smart ripe fro catalyticgenerators

But i have no idea about controller and make all this to work together.

High humidity storage, then gas rippening in separate rooms. Cannot remember the gas used.
Storage is a fine line between green bananas and a room full of mush. lots of fresh air / purging during storage

It is a requirement here to have the fans and lights flame proof within any room using ethylene,,to avoid explosions.
Remember we are here for a good time, not a long time.
    Trust me i'm a Fridgy.

For the first time, I would strongly suggest that you get some help from a consultant with experience in designing such storage,

Bananas are not potatoes and any small mistake or miss use of any control, gas or temp, and all the bananas will get black spots and they cant be sold.

Maybe you could sell your bananas to Ausie - from the cyclone they are going to increase in price. Last time they went from under $2/kilo to over $19/kilo!!! Where are you based?

All the other replies so far, are from pretenders.

Ethylene at 100 ppm is not explosive, nor corrosive. Helpman is only cooling coils, not a total solution. I can help... call me or email me. Banana Jim

    Re: Banana Ripening

    you need two different Rooms

    storage room- ripening room

    Storage room= + 12-14 normal cool room
    ripening room= + 17-18 tighten room
depends of time of ripening times
it is better you use these room(ripening room) as far as you can. and also from other rooms is more sensitive for ethylene .
do not use ethylene it is dangerous use a atalyticgenerators it is more safe.

in temperature you should check inside of banana carefully during ripening time it is not hard .
send mail to me i have more information. gholbehan@yahoo.com

    Re: Banana Ripening

    Hi Magoo
I am absolutely sweltering no crap this is the hottest day for me in the last +10 years. I've got the smallest window rattler (thankfully) in a large bedroom trying to cool down the kitchen/dining room in my apartment so it's 32° inside with a/c going and +40°C outside (at least) this is in Sydney. As for up north in Queensland they've had bad flooding and a cyclone which ruined most of my favorite fruit - Bananas. Then Victoria has lots of floods. We are used to cycles of bad weather but this year is extreme. I must mention that next month (19 03 11) is an extreme super moon which often accommodates the most extreme weather and earth quakes. Thanks for asking.

Our Warehouses are located in Greece,

I have search a lot about the ripening processes, and start getting some offers from companies.

Does anyone have experience about ripening controller like proba?

    Re: Banana Ripening

    HI,

The banana ripening standard cycle is:
    - first day-heating- from 12 C to 17-18 C. This will help the pores of the banana to increase in diameter
    - second day - gasing with ethylene. Around 1000 ppm 24 hours of gasing. This will start the ripening process
    - the rest of the days is simply ventilation. You take out the ethylene and bring fresh air in order to give the fruit the oxygen needed for ripening. As I remeber it will be a residual of around 300 ppm produced by bananas during the ripening process.

I used tarp system with HRC evaporators from Helpman.
The control system is made with a Siemens processor.

You must chose the air directioning system (tarp sysstem, side curtain system, air bag system). For each of these systems there are different air coolers.

Be sure you are making the room tight. Use special gas tight doors.
I worked with Heyden Systems, Interko and BG Door all from Holland.

    Hope that this will help.
    BR

    Re: Banana Ripening

I don't know to answer about the location, but there are small differences concerning the type of bananas you ripe.
