York Air Cooled Screw Compressor Burned
Hi All Expert,
The problem as showed below:
a) 2 phase short with earth on the compressor when i used the mega to test.
b) Star-delta starter also become black color on the cable terminal.
c) Oil level sensor & heater melt.
d) whole body of the compressor become very hot. (Estimated more than 150'C)
e) It's tripped to main incoming.
From the above condition, who can advise what is the root cause to make this happen?
Do you think the star-delta starter willl cause the compressor burned?
Thank you

Re: York Air Cooled Screw Compressor Burned
There are 1001 ways this could of burnt out, chicken and egg, comes to mind (cause and effect)
For example, if two the Star delta contactor array had siezed (welded closed) then this would cause the motor to burn, but you said you had a short to earth, this short (in rush) could weld the contacts on your star delta array.
If you are going to rewind the comp, makes sure you also complete a mechanical inspection (as mechanical problems end up showing as electrical problems)

Re: York Air Cooled Screw Compressor Burned
York uses multi strand cable termination with out lugs which most ofthe time gets loose contact and the flash over occurs. We had a chiller at Colombo where the flash over had happened within six months of installation
