Appliance Refrigerants Go 'Green'

Two major commercial HVAC players have teamed up to create a patented new green refrigerant: HCR188C1, claimed to be the first ever coolant to boast "zero global warming potential " along with a zero ozone-depletion rating.

The EPA and ASHRAE-approved mixture of ethane, butane, and propane will consume up to 48% less energy than traditional harmful hydro-fluorocarbon containing coolants.

The refrigerant also possesses properties that outperform R134a, a commonly used refrigerant today. Once approved as an alternative refrigerant, it's expected to be widely used in home freezers, refrigerators, and air-conditioning units according to the manufacturer.

Only one problem, hydrocarbon=big bang, so can only be used in small domestics or big plants designed for them.

Even worse. 410 required the safety pressures to be increased.

This 188c looks like an involuntary blend of leftover hydrocarbons.

Like if we didn't had enough of flammable stuff. For example HFO-1234yf (flammable alternative di 134a in MAC).
It seems the chemical industry is struggling between either fluorinated or flammable stuff, in myriads of variations, without a real breakthrough innovation.

The info came up on a technology listing earlier this week - as though it was a new innovation.

On research, I also saw that the parent website was circa 2008. This also had me thinking about how far their developments had progressed in the real world. Based out of Hawaii I saw... family business.
