    oil separator sizing

I'm searching for some technical documentation to size an oil separator for ammonia.
Anyoune could suggest me a book or where I can get the technical informations I need? I suppose that I can use the same rules for several refrigerants so I could also have a look to other oil separators. Of course this adjusting the physical properties.
I have a rough idea of the inside view of the separators but just a brutal one and I need to make the project so that a vessel manufacturer can produce it.
If you have some titles also in other languages it works well.

    Many thanks in advance

    Ezio

    Re: oil separator sizing

I'm no expert on these but this document gives you a nice section of their separator.

OIL SEPARATOR IS SELECTED ON MASS FLOW TO BE HANDLED . PLS MAIL ME THE FOLLOWING DATA

    EVAPORATING TEMP
    CONDENSING TEMP
COMPRESSOR CAPACITY IN KW ( LOAD CONDITION )
    R-717

I will calculate & select a size for the oil separator

    Re: oil separator sizing

    Thank you Koranne,
I'll send you the data but I'd like to have a guide to proceed with the other cases. Is there a handbook? I've the "Industrial Refrigeration Handbook" of W.F. Stoecker but there are few informations about the coalescing oil separators used on screw compressors

    hi ice wombat,
HENRY TECHNOLOGIES UK catalogue contains the information on selection of oil separators, accumulators, mufflers etc .It is a catalogue that will help you select these ; including NH3 oil separators . You can also go through ESK-SChultze Berlin , Germany catalogue

    Hi Guys
    i work for henry Tech
we can help size up a separator.
if you call the Henry Tech Uk office and ask for the Engineering Dept.
    all we need is
Max + Min Capacity of the compressor.
    evap temp
    cond temp
    and refrigerant.

I will even email the steps taken.

Henry tech catalogue is well laid out for selection of such accessories ......... I find it useful & reliable for selection.

    2) and so is esk-schultze catalogue .... It does not have nh3 selection

    Re: oil separator sizing

I've found in literature a suggested value for the gas velocity in the horizontal separator cross section. It's equal to 2,50 m/s.

I do not know wether this value is valid for all the refrigerants or each refrigerant has an its own value? In my case the ref is ammonia.

    Re: oil separator sizing

I am calculating the oil separator size for NH3 Screw compressor on the basis of 0.5m/sec.

    Re: oil separator sizing

    1) Lot of data out there on separation velocities for oil separators on Ammonia refrigerant but for a horizontal that deliberately holds some oil, the limit is about 0.9 m/sec....Which should be calc'd for the Lowest anticipated discharge pressure.

    2) the Coalescing Elements have a max effective velocity and a max pressure difference...Lots of little pieces in the Pressure Difference that are associated with the oil itself but the "basic" for an ammonia compressor is going to calc to about 0.5 m/sec. based on the Inside diameter of the cartridge at 80-deg C. gas temp.

    3) the "other" methods

    Re: oil separator sizing

Im additon to sizing the separator for the design case, you have to also look at off-design cases, especially low head or low ambient case where the CFM requirement is much higher.

For a large screw compressor application, it is not just a cook-book pick.
