Hotpoint fridge freezer model no ff200ep

After 18 months and out of warranty ice formed on the inside bottom of my fridge/freezer and each morning I came down to a puddle of water under the f/f.

I contacted Hotpoint who told me they charge £100+ call out etc. I checked this forum and discovered others had the same problem.

I then decided to try and fix the problem myself, I unscrewed the inside back and discovered another panel which held the fan, this I removed VERY CAREFULLY as the fan and wires are connected.

The drain which takes the water away was blocked with polystyrene and bits of metal also ice. I unblocked this hole and the water began flowing into the tray behind the back of f/f.

Is this blockage a ploy to get us to call out Hotpoint engineers and pay over the top call out charges.
