Lightbulb HELP... New Business Name (Poll)

Hi Guys, been working as a refrigeration engineer for nearly 13 years now and thinking it's about that time where I go out into the big bad world myself so I'm trying to think of names for my business. I've came up with a few options but still think there must be something better out there. Please guys, give me some ideas, I'll just be working myself so don't want anything too grand but still want to portray a professional company.

    Some of my ideas were...

1st Choice Cooling or 1st Choice Refrigeration

    2-Cool Refrigeration

    Rapid Refrigeration

    5* Cooling or 5* Refrigeration

    Absolute Cooling

    Sub-Zero Refrigeration

All your ideas are welcome and if you can give me some advice on starting up myself it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    How about Tayters.

I believe it's Irish slang for cold. I might want it back in years to come though!

    Cheers, Andy.

Got some good ideas there guys, thanks very much. Not too sure about the mortuary services though, done a mortuary once and had to have a body removed from the top tray so I could climb in and lie where she was so I could get access to the fan... Not cool... literally!!! Didn't sleep much that night haha

Re: HELP... New Business Name (Poll)

I have recently gone out on my own and have named my company Ellesmere Refrigeration which is after the area I am working in, this helps as alot of clients want to use someone local (cheaper mileage costs mainly but also they like to feel as though they are keeping locals employed)

Re: HELP... New Business Name (Poll)

Firstly good luck going it alone, its a brave step.

Now regarding your name, i would say that there are countless "1st choice Refrigeration" and similar names, same with 5* etc.

Sub-Zero refrigeration however has a nice ring to it.

    All the best.

Re: HELP... New Business Name (Poll)

    The names the easy part.
What you need to do is to talk to local tradies. Not a/c & refrig as they may not want to share too much with future competition, but say plumbers and sparkies etc. They might be friendly to some one they may do business with in the future if you swap a few business cards.
Ask them all the boring stuff like where they get the best results from advertising, best places for invoice books, business card, fridge magnets, sign writing, any tricks they have to get money out of customers, best banks, insurance, vehicles, debt collectors etc etc.

Re: HELP... New Business Name (Poll)

Thanks for pointing out the taken names, I was wondering though if I named the company for example Absolute Cooling (Ayr) if that would be accepted. I'm in 2 minds about spending big money on advertising in the yellow pages and think that spending the money on a descent website might be the way forward. Everyone I've spoken to say they get very little business from the Yellow Pages so I can't help but think I'd be throwing my money down the drain.

I've got a few customers lined up for when I start up myself but I've always found that when I've been sent out to hand out cards and stickers that we got loads of work through that, easily making £200-£300 a day. If I can make half that handing out my own cards I'd be more than happy and that way they'll have my stickers on their machines and they'll know who to call.

If you do decide to advertise with Yellow pages remember that it is best to be at the front of the section you are in than at the back, so try a name starting with A

Yellow pages are rubbish, you would be better off printing up flyers and dropping in cards to people.
The only work yellow pages has brought us is people phoning about domestic stuff despite our ad saying we only do commercial. Numtpy people who have no engineers and just phone round trying to get subbies to cover the warranty for some cr@p they have imported, they often don't pay so have stopped doing work for them.
Finally all the lazy salesmen will use it to get you number to try and sell you everthing from new phone to trying to get you to sponsor some random scheme they have thought up....

Re: HELP... New Business Name (Poll)

yellow pages book is useless for the above reasons.
Here there's yellow pages online, seems to work OK, people at work on the internet doing a quick search to find local businesses.
Even then it's only OK, plenty of free listing business directories that always seem to show up on google searches because of their own SEO.
But as far as the book, you just get dreggs that everyone with bigger colour ads has turned down; and heaps of cold callers trying to sell you stuff

If you're a sole trader you can call the business what you want.

It is only when registering as a limited company through companies house that you might find the name you like has already been taken.

As for advertising, I've seem cards for A/C companies in the trade business cards display at places like Wickes, Homebase, B & Q and Focus.

I don't know how much they charge, but it might be another idea

You can also spend big money on a website if you have somebody else do it for you.
Being a service industry a 'brochure' website should be all you need. You won't need eCommerce or anything like that so if you can - do it yourself.
The biggest headache with a website is getting it listed in the first 2 or 3 pages on the search engines, so spending a little on SEO helps a great deal.
Also, pick a webhost whose servers are physically located in the UK, and have a .co.uk URL, not .com/.org/.net because the search engines will place it higher in the listing for UK searches.

Everyone I've spoken to say they get very little business from the Yellow Pages so I can't help but think I'd be throwing my money down the drain.
The same goes for Thomson Local. I was with them for the first year after starting a plumbing business.
In that year, ALL our work came from ads in the local papers and referrals from customers. Thomson local was not credited with a single lead in all that time.

Whichever way you decide to go, best of luck to you.

Yellow pages is a waste of time, no one uses it anymore except OAP's.

When mine comes through the door I put it straight in the recycling bin.

If you want to get at the front of a section in the Yellow Pages though, then you have the letters aaaaaa placed somewhere on your advert.

I think we've all came to the same conclusion that Yellow Pages are a waste of time for us all but only thing is getting the name right now. I'm kind of aiming towards Sub Zero Refrigeration but other names are still welcome as I haven't got the cards or stickers made up yet.

The company name have no importance.
Customers will remember the quality of your job and the price you charge.

Be honest and never over charge your customers, call from time to time just to check that everything is OK.

Its a sort of relationship that you have to keep active at all times [unlike marriage]

If you take on some employees and you all turned up to a job at once then people could say:

"Here comes Kool and the Gang, just as well because our office is Too Hot. I'm trying to get this work done but with the heat, I can't Get Down On It. Another bloke came last week and said he'd fixed it but we were Misled. I think he wanted to knock off early because it was Ladies Night and him and his Missus were up for a bit of Hollywood Swinging, what a sad State Of Affairs. If it works now we can have a Celebration."

what about (fridgeair) keep it simple a name people can easily remember, you see when you advertise and your info is long winded people get bored very quickly.
they will see fridgeair in the refrigeration and air conditioning section and the name says it all.

Re: HELP... New Business Name (Poll)

I served my time with a small company in Stirling (Kennedy Refrigeration) that went down the tubes, and started again the following day under the name Becool (now finished again),there is another Becool from Carlisle that started after the Becool where i worked so im not sure using the same name as another firm that might not be in your area would be so much of an issue. Or even some of the names that have been used before of companies that arnt around anymore. Scotfreeze?.
