Help! Daikin Altherma HT interior unit compressor noise

I have a Daikin Altherma HT (ERSQ011AAY1/EKHBRD011AY1) 11kW heat pump installed about 9 months ago for space heating as well as hot water production.

In the last 1.5 months, the Interior Unit compressor is noisier than usual when it runs. The specs claims that th IU is supposed ot be quiet with a noise level or 43dB. However, I feel that it is much louder as I can hear the compressor running , especially at night in my bedroom, through two wooden doors.

I called the installer in today and he insists that the compressor running noise which was reproduced in his presence sounds like any other installation he has done. I told him that for the first 6 months, the noise was not at this level but he just brushed off my claims. As he said it is normal, no further action will be taken to rectify the "normal" noise. if I insists on changing the compressor, it will be at my expense, althought the compressor has a 3-year warranty.

Does anyone with an Altherma HT unit have the same perception that the interior unit compressor noise is high?

Any suggestion on what I should do next? I live in Geneva, Switzerland.

The compressors are in the outdoor unit here in the UK. The indoor unit only contains the water circulator (pump) as a moving part. Is it this that you find noisey?

I'm not familiar with the model numbers you quote.

Oopppss....just re-read the post and see that you are refering to the HT version. Haven't fitted one yet - sorry.

Hi there i have just finished the installation of my first Daikin Altherma HT today here in Spain and i think it is a great piece of kit. When i was on the Daikin HT course the lecturer had advised the indoor unit be installed in a utility room or garage with a solid floor base. If your indoor unit has been installed in your house on wooden floor boards then i do suggest moving it. The noise is not loud however i would be advising my potential clients to have the indoor unit in a garage or utility room away from bedrooms.

Hi. My Indoor Unit sits on a tiled concrete floor. It seems like the motor of the compressor is making too much noise. It wasn't so noisy before. If the Altherma HT starts becoming wonky after only 8 months, I'm just concerned that my huge investment on the heat pump technology won't last for the 10years I had expected.

So, if it is supposed to be so unusually noisy, I only have one thing to say, keep away from Daikin Altherma HT heat pump. You will have sleepless nights hearing the compressor buzzing away, even through closed doors. I may just have to sleep with ear plugs for the next 10 years.

Furtheromore there is no direct after sales service with Daikin in Switzerland to double check if the installer had done a proper installation job.

What kind of compressor is installed in the inside unit? Is it a scroll, or rotary?

At 11kW, scrolls & rotaries are not generally quiet, so you'll have the compression noise to contend with, plus any vibration transfer due to poor vibration isolators.

I doubt I'd want to sleep in a house with a large compressor installed.

Fridge compressors seem very much quieter & this probably stems from their use of springs to suspend the compressor within the outer shell.

Hi you should have a good aftersales with Daikin. If you contact direct with Daikin Switzerland and voice your concerns with the bad aftersales with a particular company, they should do something about it. Also maybe they should of fitted some tico pad which is an anti vibration pad.

In tehnical data of your unit is stated noise level or sound power at some distance.
You could measure that with sound measuring instrument and compare with technical data. If it is same or lower than stated in technical data, then you have subjective feeling of high noise. If it is higher, then you have ground for complains.

I think the Daikin Altherma HT runs on Scroll compressor. I can't post the URL of the specs here but it is in any Alterma website.

It much certainly more noisier than my fridge but that noise will be something I have to live with for the next 10 years or more unless it breaks down before then.

Unfortunately Daikin doesn't have a registered office in Switzerland. Only Authorised Dristibutor. I'm not even sure if my installer ordered the Atherma from this distributor.

That is also what a friend suggested. I'm looking around for a sound meter. The noise certainly sounds louder than the claimed 46dB. I am sure ther eis a problem because it didn't sound so loud before. So, something must have become loose or faulty. But if installer said it is normal and refuses to investigate further, it has become my sole responsibility to prove otherwise.

Hi maybe contact Daikin Europe in Belgium and ask their advice on who else they have in Switzerland as a technical service center, i cannot believe that Daikin do not have a service team in Switzerland if they sell their products for installation.

Seems i had similar problem with my unit which is sold under brand name ROTEX in Germany - but obviously inner and outer unit is the same as 11kW Daikin - except of hotwater storage

Ciculator pump in inner unit is normally running in 3 modulated levels, depending on hotwater and heating demand. Rotex changed circulator pump for hotwater in the inner unit, as it was always working on highest level.

Result: Noise is much, much lower than before.
