Voltage Trouble
I've been called to shoot a freezer. I was supposed to replace a bad compressor but was called of to another location so another replaced the Copeland that I gave him. Now I've had to go back and I replaced the starting components relay, start cap and run cap. The compressor still won't start most of the time, I start with 213v and go down to 198 or so when it tries to start I switched panel boxes, breakers and wiring to the unit same result. I have a draw of 48 amp when it tries and won't start. Any help or ideas appreciated.

Re: Voltage Trouble
Sounds like you may have a voltage supply problem. Can you check the voltage at the site source when the compressor starts?

Re: Voltage Trouble
The voltage drops but not as bad at the panel box

Re: Voltage Trouble
213 VAC Open circuit voltage seems low to begin with. Also check for bad connections and undersized wire. What is the amp rating on the comp? What size branch circuit wiring? How far away is comp from service?

Re: Voltage Trouble
sounds like you have loose connections starting gear failure or the compressor is damadged did the installer try to start the unit with the original stating kit.

Re: Voltage Trouble
The compressor is about 25 feet from service, branch circuit wire is 6 gauge, I did see 14 gauge from the end of the branch to the defrost timer and to the compressor but it ran fine before they say

Re: Voltage Trouble
The installer didn't change relay or either of the caps, don't know why that's why that was the first thing that I did. It ran with the old gear for 4 days

Re: Voltage Trouble
If possible through a correctly rated extension and protected circuit take supply from another circuit to unit. If unit runs problem solved. if not first check compressor then bypass all switching gear in line to compressor one by one, this is the long route but you will eventually find fault.

Re: Voltage Trouble
The only thing I'd run off 14 ga is an electric toothbrush

Re: Voltage Trouble
14ga is not only good for toothbrushes, domestic speakers also do well on it.

Re: Voltage Trouble
Pls. give more details on your system.,what is the HP/KW rating of your compressor?.,the capacitors rating?.,is it a hermetic compressor?..
