You need this cable in your life

    Hello,

    Check out this cable

    http://tpwcc.com/flexishield.html

SY cable is no good for outdoor installations and all of you still using it should be ashamed of yourselves (Yes, I am wagging my finger)!

If you are using standard flex then you are a degenerate!

SWA is an absolute b@*@*@d to work with and most of you are not earthing it properly!

This flexishield cable is expensive but saves masses of space and time. If we all start using it then our suppliers will stock more of it and it will revolutionise AC wiring.

    It complies with BS8436.

    Check it.

    Very cool R1976
We use a lot of this type of cable in controls wiring but in the smaller side. I am looking forward to the day when this type of cable is the norm. When/if I build my house I will use this type of cable too - mainly for its safety. By shielding electric and magnetic fields with the sheath and ground which interfare with our biological cellular communication reducing cancers. I wonder why the electricity supply lines don't use this type of cable for transmission? would there be more losses or is it just down to cost considering average transmission losses are in the order of 50%.

I believe the problem is that the clear PVC sheath on most (if not all) SY-cable has little UV-protection. If used outside it can degrade quickly and the PVC sheath eventually splits (not good).

However, some manufacturers claim their SY-cable is suitable for outdoor use, so presumably it has adequate UV-protection (something to verify before you buy). That might also be why some installers tuck the interconnect SY-cable behind the fridge pipes to keep it out of sunlight.....and I thought they were just trying to make the install look nice.

They tuck it behind to hide it!

    The shameless scoundrels!

I am interested in your comments on SY that IS suitable for outdoors, where can it be bought?

I did like using SY but found it went brittle and then filled with rainwater after about one year.

    Hi, there, R1976.
The regular SY cable that's not so good for outside sunlight is the clear sheathed variety, whereas you can get hold of BLACK sheathed SY cable, which is fine for outside (and looks nice running on top of the black armaflex insulation).

I managed to get hold of a distributor's leaflet which says: "Black SY cable is protected against UV damage therefore making the cable ideal for outdoor use."

One distributor that sells it is:
    Alpha Wholesale,

Hmmm? you go on about uv damage but how many of you consider the fact that standard pipe insulation such as Armaflex etc is not uv stable.
It doesn't take too many months before the whole run of pipework insulation on roofs and open to sunlight starts to crumble to dust.

Does anyone of you make allowance for this .. do you provide protection against uv radiation ?

You need this cable in your life

We're drifting a bit away from the original post/topic concerning the safety of using correct electrical cable and now discussing..... insulation.

Possibly insulation deservs a new/separate post?

There is armaflex paint to deal with UV, if the installer is concerned enough to tackle it. And as mentioned you can get solar armaflex insulation http://www.pipelagging.com/advanced_...19fa86&x=0&y=0 (not much different in price than regular). However, none of the regular stockists stock it so it doesn't have a chance.

But, the insulation is not really in the same league as cable, is it? If the cable splits and water gets in there is a real safety issue. If the armaflex degrades the worst is some drips on the ground, some loss of temperature, and a chance for a maint contractor to earn a few pounds in repair work -- not exactly big potatoes.
