Re: loft a/c units
Are you thinking about a complete packaged unit to mount in the loft space or are you planning to use a split unit?

Re: loft a/c units
Have you thought about the noise levels generated by the compressor etc? Good anti-vibration equipment needed plus a hole in the roof to get rid of the waste heat from the unit.

Re: loft a/c units
Very popular way of installing ac units over here.
And when there is no Attic\loft. they create on by connecting it to ceiling and creating a false on underneath.
Flexible ducts is the right way, make sure to choose good air vents to each room, about 250 cfm is what we use here.
Remember that you need to leave a way to air out of each room back to the unit. It can be done on the same ceiling or from under the door.
Place the unit in such a way that it will be simple to clean the return air filter.
Condensate can be a pain, put an extra tray under the unit, it will cost you less then repairing the ceiling.
Big diameter pipe to collect the condense water in at least 5% slope. That pipe should be checked for free flow or the water will drip on the new telly in the bedroom....
Good luck.
