Oil volume in custom refrig circuit

Hello. I am new to the refrigeration industry. On a custom built refrigeration circuit, are there any tools or formulas to use in calculating the proper volume of compressor oil to use? Or is there a rule of thumb? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The oil is for the compressor, not for the refrigeration circuit or any other component. Correct pipe sizing is the primary concern with any refrigeration system to ensure proper oil return.

So, what your saying is that the volume of compressor oil contained within a refrigeration circuit is strictly proportional to the size/type of compressor(s) used?

Exactly right. If the system piping is correct oil return will not be a problem. However there are exceptions to the rule as in flooded and ammonia systems. Also you should never add oil to a system unless you know where the existing oil has gone.
