    Old Cylinder Disposal

We have recently moved sites and 'found' a couple of old (20 years) ICI R22 cylinders plus some empties of various parentage.

Whats the collectives best view on environmentaly responsible disposal (UK) of old cylinders as we don't use R22 anymore (only a few kg left anyway) and these cylinders are well passed any safe inspection date and must be close to end of life (rust?).

Local council and ICI aren't intersted as they are no longer in the business and the distributors appear less intersested than that.

I am starting to have sympathy with fly tippers....if it wasn't for the traceability issues.

Credit to A-Gas they took all their cylinders without any fuss...

Are the cylinders empty ? If not can you empty them into reclaim cylinders for safe disposal of the gas ?

When empty how about contacting your local metal waste company and seeing if they will take them.

    Hi Derek,

If they are full, send them over
If empty and no one wants them, un screw the valve, cut them into two long half bottles, weld four legs, a good steel mesh on top and you got a BBQ grill that will last forever.

    Oh yes the old BBQ.

Once had a customer in Lahore that only took refrigerant in disposable cylinders. Eventually made a vsiit and yo, he made the empties into gas barbecues and got a UN grant for being so environmentally friendly??

As shipping to Israel is a bit costly seems I will be recovering removing valves and getting Mr power saw involved this weekend. Best idea yet was to leave them by the back door in Luton as someone will nick them eventually.
