    New Virus

    Subject: WARNING - New Virus

DO NOT OPEN: "A CARD FOR YOU"
EVEN IT IS FROM SOMEONE YOU KNOW.

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive ever This virus was discovered yesterday
afternoon [don't know the exact date of "yesterday afternoon"! MZ] by McAfee and
no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero
from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.
This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to
all contacts on your list with the title "A Card for You."

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes
so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset
button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently
destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in
New York, according to news broadcast by CNN. This alert was received by
    an employee of Microsoft itself.

So don't open any mails with subject: "A Virtual Card for You." As soon
as you get the mail, delete it! Even if you know the sender! Please pass
this mail to all of your friends.

    Re: New Virus

    A virtual card for you
    Aliases
    Virtual Card for You

    Type
    Virus hoax

    Description
There are several versions of this hoax.

The text of the first version reads as follows:

    Subject: Virus

Just to let you know a new virus was started in New York last night. This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk.

Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN www.cnn.com <<http://www.cnn.com>> This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with subject "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as you get the mail, delete it. Please pass on this mail to all your friends.

Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all.

The text of the second version reads as follows:

    W A R N I N G !
IF YOU RECEIVE AN E-MAIL WITH SUBJECT
    " A VIRTUAL CARD FOR YOU "
    DO NOT OPEN !!!
IT CONTAINS A VERY, VERY DANGEROUS VIRUS.
IT WAS CLASSIFIED YESTERDAY BY MICROSOFT AND MCAFEE AS THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE VIRUS OF ALL TIMES. VIRUS DESTROY HARD DISK. WITHOUT POSSIBILITY TO REPAIR. PLEASE SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYBODY YOU KNOW !

Not sure whether it's genuine as it isn't listed as a virus (or as a hoax). Please watchout anyway.
    Thanks,
    Bill.

The text of the third version reads as follows:

    Please read the following message!!!

    Subject: VIRUS ALERT

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft and by McAfee the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.

Please distribute this message to the greatest number of people possible. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN. This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself, Antony Joseph, Chief Systems Network Engineer, Bond House, Chiswick High Road, London, UK

The text of the fourth version reads as follows:

Subject: Worst Virus Ever... CNN Announced

PLEASE SENDS THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST!!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed.

Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered recently. If you receive an email called "An Internet Flower For You," do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.DLL files) from your computer. Your computer will not be able to boot up!!

    Good Luck

The penultimate paragraph refers to An Internet flower for you hoax.

The text of the Dutch version reads as follows:

A Virtual Card for You".
Open dus geen e-mail met als onderwerp "A Virtual Card for You".
    Uw
    pc zal onmogelijk kunnen heropstarten!
Stuur dit bericht naar al uw kennissen.
Beter 25 maal ontvangen dan niet.

The French version combines four hoaxes: Virtual Card, California IBM, Girl thing, and BUDDYLY SIP. The text reads as follows:

    Attention virus tres dangereux.

    Informations communiquees par France Telecom
Transpac Centre Support Internet Toulouse (2, Esplanade Compans Caffarelli 31903 TOULOUSE)

    Important
    Many virus hoaxes:

falsely claim to describe an extremely dangerous virus
use pseudo-technical language to make impressive-sounding (but impossible) claims
falsely claim that the report was issued or confirmed by a well-known company
ask you to forward it to all your friends and colleagues
As usual, you are urged not to pass on warnings of this kind, as the continued re-forwarding of these hoaxes simply wastes time and email bandwidth.

It is possible that you may receive a hoax via email with a file attached. Obviously, such file attachments should be treated with caution as they may be virus infected. Sophos recommends deleting virus hoax emails, whether they contain file attachments or not.

Sophos suggests a policy to help prevent hoaxes from spreading in your company.
