Ideas for Brazing Gear

Hi All,
My 1st post, lets get this one going...

One thing in the trade espicially air con, there seems to be many people lost on what to do for brazing equipment!
Fed up of carrying those large oxy acetylene kits into awkward places, or just want to lighten the van load?
Well what is there for us? the only options i can see available are the following:

1. Turbo Set (nozzles are poor, wont do anything above 1/2 , 5/8 is pushing it!)

2. Rothenberger welding kit (i have had no experiance with this one but can olnly imagine the same problems as the turboset.)

3. Microflame brazing set (well all seems positive except for oxygen not lasting 5mins, and the obvious price tag around £400!)

Does anyone have any ideas?
As i say i believe this is an area not well covered by manufacturers!

Any help/opinions/advice would be greatly recieved

Hi upto 7/8 i use an electric system for hard brazing,silver solder, copper to copper and then on bigger pipes 1 1/8 to 3 1/8 i use oxy accetalene bottles with a large heating nozzle,and for steel pipes an tig welder, any way you can,t beat the oxy accetalene ,it won,t let you down on hard to see joints because it heats fast and solder flo easy all the way round

I use rothenburger mapp torch, single barrel mapp torch, double barrel mapp torch and an oxy acc kit. Not neccesarily at the same time....

We've just bought one of the oxy mapp kits from RPW that uses returnable oxy bottles, not used it yet but Dave says its good.

Mapp gas is now propylene and not methaccetylene propadine or whatever it used to be.

Well this is getting going thanks for all your replies, as for your post monkey spanners, iv seen a few people mention about this RPW kit, do you or anyone else know a rough cost for not just the kit but also the exchange bottles...

I think it was about £270 £280 for the kit, you own the oxy bottle, then you just pay for a refill of the oxygen, the mapp gas, so no bottle rental like BOC etc.

I use a turbo set. It was poor at first but great now I drilled the nozzle tip out a wee bit.

Hi all,

I have used a Portapak from BOC in Australia for the past year or so. It has been ideal. For those not familiar with it, its a minature oxy acetylene kit. the whole kit weighs under 15kgs.

I was looking forward to purchasing my own as I have to give this set back to the company I work(ed) for.
Alas, BOC have stated they cannot sell these kits anymore as the company manufacturing a certain part for them went bust and dont make them anymore.
BOC dont give any more information than that.
Why wont they get a company to manufacture the part they need?
Many in the industry bought these. The kit weighing less than 15kgs was perfect for repairs and small installs.

Is there anyone in the world who has an alternative to this?

This is close enough to the set that I use to be meaningful.

I carry a spare of each gas and several tips to tailor my heat to the job.

Those tips make life much easier in tight spots or with larger pipe. I have used the rosebud on 1 5/8" copper with no problems. I suspect that it will do larger pipes as well.
