A new career proposal
Hi all,
If anyone knows of a college that offers courses closer to where I live, I would be most gratefull.
Any new starters out there aswell, your advice would be great. The way you went about getting up on your feet and getting recognised?
Cheers guys.

Re: A new career proposal
hi Copplemeister
you have done the right thing by contacting forum.I could be wrong but I think your nearest college will be college of north west london. When I was there we had a guy from reading its still a long way, but most important thing for you is find yourself a job in the industry as a trainee or even storeman just get your foot in for the following reason:it will heip you to see if thats what you want to do.You will achieve 4 qualifications in 2 years....Tech certificate level 2,NvQ level 2 air conditioning and refrigeration,Safe handling 2078 ,and possible the new qualification which nobody has at the moment F-Gas qualification and obviosly the most important one EXPIRIENCE.yes it wont be easy but you approach as many local companies as you can.If you don't get any luck then don't worry just get yourself to collge within your first year you will find the job full stop.
If you don't mind me asking but what actually made you think about this trade? What you want to achieve in this industry?

Re: A new career proposal
Every industry has seen some type of of effect from the recession. Only government and health fields are growing. Getting started in refrigeration is a decent choice.

Re: A new career proposal
Hats off to you for actually getting on here and asking advice...
I studied for a qualification in 1996 and gained 3 City & Guilds in Refrigeration and AC and in them days C&G 2077 gas handling.
I had 12 months working as an improver with a commercial refrigeration company working with Supermarket refrigeration systems in 1997-98 , and recently 3 months with a small AC company installing small splits and VRV's.
I intending to try and re-enter the industry as a mate or improver despite all my efforts , have lost count at the number of AC and Refrigeration companies I have contacted over the last 6 months.
No one in my area (Kent) seems to be employing anyone...
Despite a qualification, and despite some working knowledge I can't seem to get employment.
My advice is : Try and get a job with a company first - Get them to put you through college, and do it that way, because even getting a qualification won't get you a job in todays market place.
