give me the definition of a return line, I am familair with liguid, suction and hot gas lines on a nh3 system.

You have to provide more context on the actual pipe you are describing. Is it for defrost or something else. The terminology used in this business can be confusing because there is very little agreement on what something should be called.
If all else fails, ask for help.
