Carrier chiller 30ra/rh
Kindly someone help me urgently, i am attending above chiller, error message was 46 which is water flow switch failure.
1. I found there was no water circulation in the chiller. main water pipe was closed. I opened the main water tap.
2. I purged air in all the valves.
3. I switch on the unit, water pump was on but after few minutes alarm comes on (error message 46) & the unit shutting down.
4. I spoke with the technician in carrier chiller, they advised me to clean the strainer. i did that so, but still error comes on.
I checked outlet of the water flow switch, but there is a water when the pump is on.
kindly someone help me to trouble shoot this chiller.

Re: Carrier chiller 30ra/rh
Is the water flow switch responding to the water flow or has it failed?
Switch should change over from NO to NC on water flow.Brian - Newton Abbot, Devon, UK

Re: Carrier chiller 30ra/rh
Hi Brian,
Thank you very much for your prompt response.
yes, water flow is responding to the water flow.
when i tried to switch on the chiller, water pump runs 2-3 minutes. After that alarm is on then unit shutting down automatically.
when pump is running, i checked the outlet of the valve, water was flowing.
It seems like water flow switch is fine.
Because water flow switch coil is warm (energising).
Kindly give a advice how to check exactly whether water flow switch is working fine.

Re: Carrier chiller 30ra/rh
Hi these units might have a thermal flow switch on the outlet, with a bargraph indicating flow, these units have been known to cause trouble and need to be calibrated.
if you have a simple differntial flow switch ,try to purge the air out of the pipes leading to the switch,
it seems like the controller isnt getting the flow signal!

Re: Carrier chiller 30ra/rh
hi if you have no water flow , and the chiller is running , its a good chance you are blowing gas not air out of the chilled water system the flow switch should stop the w-c instantly it detects no water flow.
so first make sure you have full water flow before switching on the chiller

Re: Carrier chiller 30ra/rh
hey peter, ive had this problem before on a carrier 30 water chiller, if its one of the really older ones, with the water flow probes in the inlet and outlet pipes, replace them, but only if you are positive that the water is pumping

Re: Carrier chiller 30ra/rh
alarm 46 can be another reason. first of all what kind of flow switch is this? generally carrier use electronical flow switches. u can see the response by the leds. if they r green or yellow u no alarm is comming. if red flow alarm will come. if the fs is not elec. u have follow the cable. may be there is another interlock. so often i m using evap pumps contactors NO terminals with flow switch.
