How Much Should An AC Apprentice Get Paid

Hi im starting an ac apprenticeship with my dad nick uk on here and we are discussing my weekly rate. The average for an apprentice is 170 a week according to the apprentiships website. Then he says how much of that should go to housekeeping.

He strikes up the argument he earnt 17 pound a week on his apprenticeship.
(BACK IN THE DARK AGES) ()
10 of which went to his mum then his bus fair leaving him with about 3.50.

This is all in good humour so we decided to post it on here and see what you all think I should get paid. lol

So go ahead and determine my financial happiness!

PS Can i also say this website is a great resource and is really a great help in terms of my understanding of refrigeration and ac so cheers for the posts and threads!!!! And please keep it up.........

im with dad but i can say wages are alot better now than what they used to be as im sure your dad will agree,i think first years are around the $350 mark over here compared to $62 in the dim dark ages and overtime is more plentiful now.guess your going to have to convince of your skill level and stop wrecking his tools as most of you young bucks tend to do.good luck hope you enjoy the trade im still trying to find a way out.

What is the minimum wage for your age group, what you have to remember is you have the opportunity to learn a specialised trade which will reap greater rewards later on, look at the bigger long term picture and what you can earn with experience, you have a great opportunity.

Regarding board, my daughter pays £25 per week which is an absolute bargain, I wish I could board for £25 and have all my washing, cleaning, cooking, TV + internet, free electric & heating freshly made sandwiches every working day and all toiletries bought for me for £25per week!

First make sure that you get the at least the minimum wage.

As to how much you should pay at home...
    What services do you get?
To start with look in the local papers to see what the average lodger has to pay.
Then ask your mum how much the weekly food bill is and divide this by the number of people in the household.
Also ask your mum how much time she spend washing, ironing and cleaning for you. You should at least pay her minimum wage for this.
Anything else you benefit from? Cable TV? Phone? Internet?

BTW, well done for entering our trade!

As far as i know(maybe this unique to Ireland) apprentices aren't covered by minimum wage legislation

First year rate here is...........6euro an hour

but it is only for one year and you are living at home...to be fair I'd say contact YTS or similar, there could well be a fixed rate.

Good luck and fair play to your old man, takes nerves of steel to employ in these times!

Our 1st years are lucky to get $300 a week i started on $250 not so long ago so things have improved. But i think you shouldn't pay housekeeping, thats what parents are for to support you. Then when they get old and need help the roles are reversed

You would have to be a tight arz, and you would also have short arms and deep pockets.
I have 4 children never charged them a red cent board.
My theory is, give them every opportuntity for a prosporous life, because for the next 25 years I will be living in their pockets free of charge, thats 3 months a year per child, a bargin I beleive.

There taking advantage of you. They know they can blow there money because you always bail them out. My parents never charged me board because they know my money is going into the right places and not blowing it on piss and drugs.

I started on 3 quid an hour. thats 120 on a basic 40 hour week. That was in 2007. Now im on 4.77 which is the legal requirement because im over 19. .The question is how generous is your boss. . . Legally he can pay you 80 quid a week if he wants. Is a stupid system... i work harder and do some jobs engineers do. Yet i earn less than minimum wage for a normal job... Just got to look ahead and wait for the qualification

    Hi Andy W.,
Way back in July your comment.. LOL.
OK two married with their own homes, one flatting and half in my pocket, one at home totally self sufficient. So it is just me and her from indoors ( still expensive to own ). My theory of living with them still stands and is common knowledge within. What will really peez me off is if I kark it before the benefits of plan.

Hey magoo, Kids are still costing me a fortune and they dont even live with me, my youngest girl was in hospital recently so lost 3 weeks wages, i gave her the money out of my own pocket so she didnt struggle and she was able to pay her own committments, my eldest last weekend wrote her car off, we are looking at cars right now whilst she has a loan car so your original comment of me been tight, more like me be soft lol.

    AC Apprentice
the idea of not going to college and not doing a proper apprenticeship these days is very short sighted. There is funding available from the government so it wont cost much and with a full qualification you have the opportunity to work anywhere in the world. Most companies know are looking for NVQ's and experience as a minimum. To be honest a 2079 or CITB equivalent counts for nothing, I can teach anybody in a week to pass it so it certainly dont prove you are a competent fridge engineer.

    Andy W,
OK you are a big softy, hope you daughters are OK.
But sounds all to familar. Just today paid off youngest daughters car repair bill. Other daughter sick with glandular fever, so am subsidizing flatting and general expenses.
I was thinking that I was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but was some sod with a torch delivering more bills.
