How to choose LP & HP receiver?

Hi everybody

When I studied at University, my teacher told me that:
" To calculate the LP & HP receiver we need to know the volume of static evaporator and fan evaporator"
But sometimes I don't know exactly this condition, and I often choose it by massflow.

Does anyone can tell me the correct way to choose it?
I mean the formula (not use software, I don't like to use software).

If you know the pipe sizes then you can perform a volume calculation.

Yes, I often use Danfoss (DIRcal) to select it.
