stultz receiver question

hi all

My company has quoted a Stultz close control system, the system has quite a long pipe run so as part of the quote they have included a kit which included a Receiver tank, oil separator, ORI valve, and ORD valve.

But my question is does the system need a liquid receiver as the load from the server room is going to be constant?

Also can we use a standard receiver and separator etc, as the parts Stultz are offering seem very expensive

I suppose you would have to ask whether any warranty would be invalidated if you didn't fit their specified parts.

Dannycool, stick with the total design as being quoted, Yes the server room will have constant load and close control, reason for ORI/ORD valves to maintain constant coil conditions with varying ambient summer/winter conditions. And the receiver is for pump down of system charge, for servicing plant.

Good point Brian i'd not thought of that.

Magoo, i understand about the valves but the receiver wasnt recommended until the lenth of piperun was mentioned.

Also surly these will be standard off the shelf parts that Stultz are inflating the price of. These are surely something we could source ourselves from HRP or the like .

A receiver is a vessel, an ORI and an ORD and all 3 serves a certain function, whatever brand you use.
Nothing can go wrong choosing another brand.
Concerning warranty: if it was me , they should prove me why this could influence the warranty and it's up to you to negotiate about that. I think Stulz will not let go a close control for an ORI or ORD or a steel tube.
And you're right, with a stable load, you even don't need a vessel.

I dont think it is like this.
As Magoo said "reason for ORI/ORD valves is to maintain constant coil conditions with varying ambient summer/winter conditions".
In winter time you need extra charge to flood the condenser and to maintain sufficient operation head pressure. So in summer time the extra charge will be stay in receiver.

You can maintain HP also with fan controls and not with flooding the coil.
Most new chillers, even the very big ones don't have receivers (Carrier, York, Trane, Lennox,..)
I know a chiller running of 1 MW without a receiver.
They're of course critical charged then.

And also, to decrease energy consumption, why not lower HP as much as possible and permitted and control compressor capacity to match load?
This is my opinion the best way to control varying loads.
