    Run Capacitor Problems

I am replacing a hermetic compressor on a 1 ton heat pump. The existing run capacitor has a terminal for the compressor, a terminal for the fan and a common terminal. I have been given a 2 terminal run capacitor without a common terminal and been told to make it work ! How do I do this ? Is the common just a terminal block or is it wired to the capacitor internally ?

    Re: Run Capacitor Problems

Some old units had three terminal capacitors which were actually 2 capacitors in one. That is what you may have had. They were 2 different capacitances in one body. If this is the case you will need 1 capacitor for each motor. The old capacitor should have the 2 capacitances written on its body. You will need to get 2 capacitors the same otherwise the motors will not work correctly.
