Re: do u need an accumulator on a chiller?

Accumulators are needed where reduction in heat load can result in floodback to the compressor. On most systems they are not needed... so the answers to your questions are: maybe and maybe.

On a water chiller, it is seldom used. I can say that none of the primary chiller manufacturers I know of install accumulators on the suction.

Load variation is main issue. Most chiller manufacturers do it out of abudent pre-caution against floodback since load variation is out of their control when chiller is delivered to customer.

It is used for safety purpose. If there is a variable load on evaporator accumulator is used. For small capacity water chiller accumulator is rarely used. To omit accumulator, u use thermostatic expansion valve, to feed the evaporator according to load.

If you are talking of Water / brine chiller accumulators are not needed.
If it is cold room refrigeration system accumulators may be required.

It all depend on design and working conditions.

Some manufacturers have them and some don't.
