can any body explain the basis for a chilled water storage tank in a packaged chilling plant ? what's the reason for keeping partition in it ( a hot well and acold well )?

    hi dchatta,

water entering from the plant to the hot well, from there, into the the coolind unit and back to the cold well. from there, cold water supply is entering the plant.

it saves two tanks that are connected with a pipe that does the same.

in these systems a mixing valve should be used to save energy.

The water tank is also used to ensure sufficient load on the machine. The manufacturer has designed it to cool down a specific quantity of water but cannot be sure of the capacity of the pipework system. By having a storage tank it reduces the chances of the machine hunting due to reduced load.

    Re: chilled water storage tank!

    Hi
a buffer tank is usually fitted to allow for a ten minute delay in restarting the compressor (nominal 6 starts per hour) and to handle peak loading. The tank is split warm return cold suply and usually set up with primary, evaporator pump and secondary service pump, with the evaporator pump being nominally 10% higher in flow rate than the service pump to allow for spill over from the cold to hot side only, so that only cooled water is supplied to the process.
    Kind Regards. Andy

    Re: chilled water storage tank!

    10x for reply,
ur reply has cleared off many doubts

but how are the various tank sizes decided ? is there some thumb rule for it , as like we have for condenser cooling water: 3 GPM per TR.

and how do we calculate flow rate for GLYCOL mixtures ?
what should be the criteria for selecting the pump for glycol(mixture) supply pump. do we have a thumb rule here also ...
