Most good university, or college heat-transfer textbooks will have a section on the basics of heat-pipes.
If you use e-mule, you should be able to locate a few good books on heat-pipe operation & design.

The easiest way is with water ... fill half the pipe with water and evacuate ... boiling starts in 30 degrees celsius

This device in its advanced form is used for the relativly new solar hot water heat tubes made of cu and lo iron glass. And I think I saw some superconducting heat pipes on a net search too.
