Cutting through Stainless Steel
I need to bore a 4" hole through a double brick wall, on the inside is a stainless steel plate. The stainless is just a cladding, so not very thick.
What tool can I use to cut through the stainless steel plate cladding?
Any help would be appreciated
Thx

Re: Cutting through Stainless Steel
a normal starett cutter will do this but keep the speed low a it will burn and blunt very quickly
or even a diamond cutter as you would use normally for holes -these will cut steel reinforce rods in concrete -again take it slowly
cheers

Re: Cutting through Stainless Steel
hi abe,
heat does not travel well in SS, ie it a good insulator. as richard said, use a starett holesaw 4" very low speed as speed on these things is measured at meter per second.
you need to turn such diameter at 30 to 40 rpm. use cutting coolant or the holesaw will burn. if getting hot, stop and cool and so on till you go through.
watch out, the edge is very sharp. file it before you stick your hand through.
good luck.

Re: Cutting through Stainless Steel
You can use a Smith & Arrow cutting disc. I use it for my line of work. I think it will do just fine with your stainless steel plate.

Re: Cutting through Stainless Steel
If all else fails with SS borrow a plasma cutter, quick and easy.

Re: Cutting through Stainless Steel
Magoo is right plasma is so quick and painless on stainless. I do a lot of stainless work and if am forced to use mechanical cutting methods believe it or not after trying everything, I have found that a spray bottle with water works the best of all. Use lots. Various cutting oils actually make it worse. Someone commented the original post was old but various members could still benefit from other members' knowledge being added.
