    European Working Hours!

Basically if the Austrian working hours are implemented here in 2011.
Then anyone who relies on overtime needs to look for a serious pay rise.
Basically the Austrian guys I was talking to last week.
Are allowed to do overtime for 5 weekly periods within each year.
The working week includes Travel time IE. 40hrs total per week!
I don't know whether it is finalised as to whether we are still opting out in 2011.
    But if we are not!
Then WE ALL will have to look at how we earn our monies!
I suspect the supermarket guys will be worst hit?
I don't know how this all affects the self employed?

    Re: European Working Hours!

I posted a thread on this many weeks ago. Basically they have already voted through round one and am sure they vote again this month to pass it further. Gordon Brown didnt want his mps to vote yes but the majority did. They hope to produce more jobs through it. The only way I can see out of it is if the next party voted in decided to opt out of the EU. I dont think its fair another freedom on choice taken away from us. Nanny state brought in even further.

Here`s the scenario: you`re on a breakdown, times getting on and you realise you`ve used your up allowable hours according to the European working rule directive. So you`ve got to tell the customer "sorry but I`ve run out of time I`ll have to call the office to get another guy out to carry on, in the meantime you production will grind to a halt" It`s just not going to happen is it.
There`s no way a fat cat MEP`s going to tell me how much o/t I`m gonna work, not unless he`s willing to swap wages with me.

I`m having a bad flare day

    Re: European Working Hours!

i imagine it will be interpreted the same as the rules governing HGV drivers, ie if on an urgent call/delivery you can complete and head home so long as over a two week period you haven't exceeded the max allowance(yep it's a fricking nightmare, spent a year trying to diddle hours for a delivery company, had to give up and seek a saner career in refrigeration.

    good luck with that!

would it be too much of a generalisation to say that our european brethren are more predisposed to obey a ruling such as this whereas ourselves and the uk would look to work around it as much as possible?

    Re: European Working Hours!

apparently it wil work on an avergare so you could work 52 hours one week and would have to compensate for the extra work during the following weeks. If your found to be working over you employer will be fined. I think its very unfair. What about those who need to work more to compensate for there other half having a low wage or not being able to work. All that will happen is the rich will get richer and the poor will stay poor. I look at it as my right to decide what I want to do. This European lot seem to dictate everything to us. If I had the chance I would vote out of europe. We managed before without there intervention!

I think it`s up to companies to give the finger to the finger to this impending rule. If we roll over and take it then well deserve what we get. Do what the French do: ignore laws they don`t like.
Another thing to ponder is if your company complies with it there`ll be plenty who`ll be ready to "help" your customer out.

    Re: European Working Hours!

All that will happen is that more people and vans will be needed to carry out the same job which is what they want. I dread the day this comes in. Just working an eight hour day would drive me up the wall. I work because I enjoy what I do and it makes me good money. I wouldnt work the hours if I didnt like it. I dont see whats wrong with the opt out. Basically its big brother and europe are calling the shots and we will role over as usual. Its ok for the guy at the top getting paid hundreds of thousands for doing his job. So will this mean we will need two priministers as well as Im sure Gordon browns working week will be longer than 40 hours! Another kick in the nuts for the working man.

That or I just see people working and being payed in black, avoiding hours being accounted for.
This is just another way of legalising slavery and discounting welfare.

It will be those in the big companies who will suffer the most as its harder to hide!

    Re: European Working Hours!

And those in big companies forced to comply, will just watch while others bend the rules?
My understanding of Human nature tells me otherwise.
So the minimum wage was going to kill us all.... it did not!
If adopted this will not either, but as I am trying to point out it will hurt those that rely on excessive overtime!
    Sorry I will rephrase that.
    More than a little!
If it is made law IT'S LAW!
Mind until we are told otherwise this may be speculation.
My advise, use the time left to increase your Basic wage.
Because whatever happens Qualified Engineers won't be out of a Job.
    Logically demand should be greater?

I am glad we do not have worry about this on this side of the pond. I think it would hurt any industry!
