How do you determine type of refrigerant in the system?

Does anyone know how you are able to determine the type of refrigerant that is already inside the system? Sometimes the type of refrigerant that is actually inside the system is not the actual type that is specified on the unit's tag. Is there any way to tell what has actually been used in the system?

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Try taking the standing pressure of the refrigerant in the system & ambient temperature.
Look on a refrigerant comparitor to see which refrigerant has pressure which is a match for the temp.
Provided the system still has some liquid refrigerant this basic test should give first indication.

I see you've never worked on a "greencool" chiller.

Every component says R22 - they contain PROPANE.

The only way to be sure is to get the refrigerant analysed or use a refractometer.

Not really, but if you read the OP you will realise that your answer does not relate to it.

Hi! I know of an analyser under the barndname TASCO which is designed to determine the refrigerant compositions. The machine can even identify most HFC and even CFCs.

    Hope it helps!
