Re: R22 leaking into a boiler

A bit more info would help here - be specific.
Is it R22 vapour entering the air inlet to the combustion chamber?
Or R22 entering the water supply to the boiler - such as a leaking heat exchanger before the boiler?

I've seen the effects of R22 entering a boiler thru the air intake, the effects can be somewhat dramatic.
8 out of the 12 boilers exploded, in each case a flame over 15' (5M) long shot out of the 2' (600mm) square exhaust flue.
The heat will break the R22 down, it will then react with the water in air and exhaust fumes to produce some very nasty acids and phosgene gas.
The acids will destry the combustion tube in the boiler, an explosion will shortly follow.

    Shut down the boiler.
    Fix the leak.

Then get the boiler inspected, before it fails.

    .

R22, in common with many chlorinated refrigerants and other types, produce toxic gases during combustion.

Please read the Safety Data sheets for each type for more detailed info

If you are responsible for it, you don't want to get caught, but should be.

If you are in the vicinity - don't inhale it - get away quickly.

Do we assume from the question that you have an R22 system with a pressure relief valve discharging into a boiler room ?
