Measure the height of the loop (feet) and divide by two. This is the minimum pressure (psi) that must be maintained at the bottom of the loop.

For example, if the height of the building/loop is 50 ft, the system needs 25 psi at the bottom when the water pressure is at its lowest (coldest water). Any less will put the top of the system in a vacuum and invite air problems.

PRV's come factory set at 12 psi, which is sufficient for most residential systems, but the setting must be increased for higher structures.

To correctly determine pressures in systems and to dimension expansion vessels, safety valves, filling networks and etc.... you could use this software.
